Janet Evelyn Steeves
1931-2022

Janet Evelyn Steeves, 90, of Riverview
and formerly of Hillsborough passed away peacefully in her sleep at
her residence.

Born on November 17, 1931 in Dover, NB
she was the daughter of the late Frank Dernier and Mildred
(Steeves).

Janet was predeceased by her husband
Sheldon William, her sister Nellie, brothers Kenneth and Floyd and
son-in-laws Vaughn Fenton and Robert (Bob) Cooke.
She is survived by daughters Nancy
Jonah (Danny), Lana Cooke, Susan Fenton, brother Robert Dernier
(Judy), sister-in-law Betty Wright (John), grandsons Jeffrey Cooke
(Tracy), Craig Fenton and Christopher Jonah (Danielle), six great
grandchildren Alisha (Stephen), Mitchell (Keisha), Cody, Macayla
(Jessie), Emma and Kara, three great-great grandchildren Paisley,
Easton and, Jackson and several nieces, nephews and
cousins.

Janet was first and foremost a wife,
mother and grandmother. Her family was her world. She met and married
the love of her life, Sheldon and they had forty wonderful years
together before he passed away at the early age of 61. They spent many
Friday evenings in earlier times at League Bowling which was never to
be missed. Janet also enjoyed singing in the Silver Chords Choir at
Hillsborough Baptist where she attended regularly for many years.
After her retirement from custodial work at Caledonia Regional High
School where she made many good friends and had many good times, you
could often find her having breakfast with girlfriends Rowena, Lorna
and Ellen at the local diner. She was also an avid reader and loved to
crochet until her eye sight made those enjoyments
impossible.

Janet was a strong lady who was
determined to have the best possible life and be there for her family
even as macular degeneration stole her vision. The phone became her
lifeline as she kept in touch with many friends. Her good friend Byron
Cooke enjoyed their daily chats. She was so happy to be with her girls
and went on many shopping excursions which she loved. But what she
loved more than anything else was family. Her children and
grandchildren and greats were everything to her. She never missed an
opportunity to spend time with these special people and family
gatherings were the highlights of her life. If she could not see them
in person then the telephone became her best friend. She always made
sure that they knew how much she cared for them and supported them.
Every family event would find Grammy Janet front and
center.

She was fortunate to be in her own
apartment right up until the last days and had a mind as sharp as a
tack in her 90s. She very much enjoyed social events at the apartment
building where she lived. We would like to say a special thank you to
each of you in the apartment building who treated our mother with such
kindness and respect. Just last Sunday she had the pleasure of
attending a birthday party sharing good times and cake with family and
friends as she loved to do. She felt so blessed to be so well cared
for, but never wanted to be a burden to anyone. She was very
independent and always put the needs of others before her own. She has
left a legacy of not only strength, but love and kindness which her
girls and grandchildren will continue to emulate throughout their
lives.

We are so grateful God chose you to
give birth to us, for he has truly blessed us with the greatest Mom on
earth. You have always been there to listen, guide or mend. You were
our confident, hero and best friend. There was no mother in this world
more loved than you. Words are not enough to express the unconditional
love that exists between a mother and her daughters. We will carry you
in our hearts forever. Love you Mom.

There will be no visitation prior to
the Celebration of Life service to be held at Albert County Funeral
Home at 2:00 o’clock on Monday, July 18 with Pastor Paul
Steeves presiding. A reception for Janet’s family and
friends will follow the service. Interment will be in Green Hill
Cemetery. Memorial donations to Green Hill Cemetery would be much
appreciated or to another charity of the donor’s
choice.
