Helen Maureen (Bates) Carter passed away at the age of 74 on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on May 22, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Thomas “Tom” and Mary “Lizzy” (Campbell) Bates.
Helen faced many challenges over her life due to mental illness. In spite of this, she was a vibrant lively person who loved music, dancing, and being with family. She was a dedicated member of her parish choir and an active member of whatever community she resided in, volunteering many hours in her children’s schools, her church, as well the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia to name a few.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 47 years, Lloyd; son, Travis (Karen), BC; daughter, Kelly (Brandon) Carter-Lynn, Seattle; sisters, Patricia Mullins, Brandon, Manitoba and Pauline (Bill) MacDonald, Tantallon; brother, Tommy (Jackie), Eastern Passage; brother-in-law, Earl Doyle, D’Escousse; grandsons, Aries, Seth, Benjamin, Blaine (Ashlynn), Raleigh and Leif.
She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Rose Doyle; and brothers-in-law, Kevin MacDonald and Bill Mullins. She will also be missed by her life-long friends, Jeanette, Lois and Joannie.
Visitation will take place in Sacred Heart Church, Marion Bridge on Monday, May 30, 2022 from 10-11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Following the Funeral Mass, a reception will be held. Interment will take place in Stella Maris Cemetery, Louisbourg.
