Helen Marie MacLeod

We, the family of Helen MacLeod regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, August 24th 2022, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neil’s Harbour.
Mom and her twin sister Carmen were born in Ingonish and raised by their maternal grandparents Marcella and Archie MacKinnon. Mom had the privilege of being surrounded by a large immediate and extended family.
She proudly spent most of her life as a stay- at- home mom. Evenings were spent playing cards and board games and always ended with five girls piled on her bed waiting for a story from the big book of fairy tales. Mom had a real passion for books and could often be found reading intently (this was the ideal time to a get a yes for whatever hair-brained idea you had). One of her favorite reading spots was under the maple tree at the lake where she was on constant lifeguard duty to every neighborhood kid who all affectionately called her « Ma ». Mom had many interests throughout her life, but enjoyed nothing more than a cup of tea, a good conversation, and something sweet. She really loved flowers of every kind and watching the birds in the feeders, and of course ‘gently’ reminding Gerald to feed the birds. In later years her focus was on her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she took every opportunity she could to brag about them all.
Mom is survived by her partner of 32 years Gerald Hatcher, her daughters Audrey (Kelly), Lisa (Perry), Janice (Barry), Belinda (Jim), Anita (Derek) and stepchildren Blair (Adele), Gary (Janet), Amy (Cliffton), her twin sister Carmen Hussey, her brothers George (Leona), William (Debbie), Eric (Donnalynn), sisters-in-law Sandra, Gail, Lexi, and her two special aunts Floss and Emma. Mom is also survived by her pride and joy, her grandchildren Tara, Tyler, Nicole, Ryan, Marsha, Jordon, Jamanda, Patrick, Emily Jane, Alex, Sammy Jo, and 10 great grand-children.
Besides her grandparents, she was predeceased by her mother Margaret, brothers Donnie and David and grandchildren Carter and Scarlett.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital who treated mom with the upmost kindness, compassion and respect while delivering exceptional care.

A memorial service will take place at St. Peter’s Church on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 2:00 pm, the family will receive visitors starting at 1:00 pm.
