KING, Graeme Lewis ~ Age 69, of Berwick, Kings Co. It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Graeme Lewis King at home on Sunday, May 16, 2021, with his loving family by his side. He fought valiantly but finally lost his battle with cancer. Graeme was born in Shelburne, N.S., on January 4, 1952, to the late Archibald and Joan (Donahoe) King. Growing up in Shelburne, Graeme was active in the scouting movement and very proudly received his Queen Scout Award from the Queen Mother. He received his post-secondary education from Dalhousie University graduating in 1974 with a combined B.A and B. Ed degree. After graduation he moved to the Annapolis Valley where he began a very long and successful teaching career at Central Kings Rural High. During his time at CK, Graeme assumed an active role as Student Government Advisor helping to develop leadership abilities in a number of students. He also aided his fellow teachers by serving as the local NSTU rep for many years. In his earlier years of teaching Graeme also chaperoned several European trips with students. Being of a strong faith Graeme was very involved in his local church, St. Anthony of Padua, in Berwick. Many hours were spent on various committees in the Church most recently as Church Treasurer. Graeme was an accomplished musician and spent several years as co-chair of the music ministry for the Church. One of his most favorite activities was as Director of the men’s choir, Men of St. Anthony and Friends. After retirement, Graeme continued to work with young people acting as a supervisor of student teachers for the Department of Education at Acadia University, a position which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also continued his Union work by taking an active role in the local Retired Teachers Organization. Retirement also afforded some time for Graeme and his wife, Dorothy, to travel and take some enjoyable trips with family and friends. Graeme is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Dorothy Crossman; and daughters, Suzanne, Denver, Colorado; Stephanie, Berwick; and Andrea, Halifax. Also surviving are siblings, Barry (Mary Ellen); Wayne (Debi); Karen (Keith Stothart); Colin (Angela); sister-in-law, Margaret Yorke; several nieces and nephews; and close friend, Cleo D’Eon. Besides his parents, Graeme was predeceased by brother, Brian; mother-in-law, Lorraine Crossman; brother-in-law, Harlan Yorke and special family friend, E.M. “Jean” Lohnes. Special thanks go to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses, Senior Home Care by Angels, Surgical Unit at Valley Regional Hospital, and Dr. Robin Bustin. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 13, 2022, in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 120 Mill Street, Berwick. Rev. Fr. John MacPherson officiating, with interment in Berwick Cemetery. A reception will take place in the Parish Centre.
