Gioacchino’s Obituary
Gioacchino “Jack” Giancani was born July 6th, 1927 in Sicily, Italy.
The beloved husband of Narda for 68 years, Jack was a devoted family man. Together they raised 3 wonderful children who made him very proud.
For 22 years Jack co-owned and managed Mattina Brothers Hardware on James Street North, with his brothers-in-law. A position that made him proud until his retirement. Jack was also very fond of his backyard garden. A small space that he turned into an urban farm every summer.
Jack’s calm demeanor came in handy as a Nonno to his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As children, they all spent many days at his house walking with him to the market or listening to him tell family stories at a pace that can only be described as measured.
Jack and Narda lived in their same North End house together until 2019, when they were briefly separated due to health complications and spent the beginning of the pandemic only able to see each other on Zoom. In June 2021, the couple was reunited when Jack moved into Idlewyld Manor. Back together again, both could be frequently found napping next to one another and, even after 68 years of marriage, were still sneaking kisses and holding hands.
On the morning of January 17th, during a record-setting snowstorm, Jack was sitting next to his beloved wife when he peacefully passed in his 95th year.
Survived by his loving wife, Leonarda, and children, Florence (Vid) and Vinzi (Keith), and Tom. Loving Nonno to his grandchildren Chris, Melissa, Devon, Taylor, Chelsea and Madison. And four great-grandchildren Jackson, Nora, Ezekiel, and Fletcher.
Jack was the beloved son of late Tommaso and Alfonsa Giancani. Predeceased by brothers Salvatore (Grazia) from Italy, Calogero (Maria), Giuseppe (Anna), Nicolo (survived by Giuseppina), and sister Concetta (Giuseppe) Tirone.
Predeceased by cherished sister-in-law to Rose Partito (Sam), Sara Bonotti. Survived by brothers-in-law Charlie (Lina), Sam (Grace), Louie (Mary-Ellen) and brother-in-law Damiano Bonotti.
Predeceased by his aunt Maria Cino and remembered by her loving family. Jack will be missed and remembered by many nieces and nephews in Canada and in Italy.
The family would like to thank the amazing doctor’s nurses, PSW’s and staff at Villa Italia and especially Idlewyld Manor. A special thank you to Dr. Kerr, who truly went above and beyond.
A private visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL. A Funeral Mass will be offered at All Souls Church on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 2 PM.
Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Idlewyld Manor.
