It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, poppy, husband, and brother, Gidues “Gid” Rex Mitchell, who passed away suddenly after a short illness at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor on October 19, 2022 at the age of 79.
Gid was born in Woodstock, Newfoundland to the late Dorman and Rosie Mitchell, on June 3, 1943, as the eldest of twelve children. He married his wife, Leatrice, on September 23, 1964 and they shared 58 years together and three children. Everyone who knew Gid knew that he was always up for a chat and would take time out of his day to listen to yours. Always a hard worker, Gid played numerous roles in his community. Many will remember Gid for his years spent as the school bus driver, and Woodstock town council member. We fondly remember how Gid devoted much of his later years to the care and dedication of Leatrice whom he loved very much.
Gid will be deeply missed by his wife of 58 years, Leatrice Mitchell; sons, Percy, Keith, and Corey Mitchell (Julie). Loving Poppy to Cassandra Mitchell, Alex Mitchell (Liz), Parker Mitchell (Chevonne), Sarah Mitchell-Bush (Jay), Brianna Mitchell (Matt), Amy Mitchell (Brodie), Ethan Mitchell (Hanna), Eva-Rae Mitchell, and Kyle Mitchell. Great-Grandfather to Madison, Isabella, AJ, Jaidyn, Charlotte, Jaxson, and Emma; siblings, Goldie Companion Taylor (Norm), Maisie Smith, Larry Mitchell (Lisa Squires), Myrtle Mitchell, Avis Francis (David Elvarade), Lola Simms, Linda Burton and Dennis Mitchell (Sylvia); mother-in-law, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Decker; brothers-in-law, Howard Decker (Gladys) and Winston Decker; sister-in-law, Ann Mitchell, and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Dorman and Rosie Mitchell, his sisters, Nina Decker and Eva Randell (Eddie), and brother, Guy Mitchell; father-in-law, Samuel Decker, and brothers-in-law, Henry Companion, Bill Parsons, Nelson Burton and Bob Smith.
Public visitation took place from The Salvation Army Citadel, Woodstock, NL on Sunday, October 23, 2022 from 3-4pm.
The funeral service took place from The Salvation Army Citadel, Woodstock, NL on Monday, October 24m, 2022 at 2pm with Majors Neil and Delores Abbott officiating. Interment followed from The Salvation Army Cemetery, Woodstock, NL.
As an expression of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Gid’s memory to The Salvation Army Citadel, P.O. Box 17, Woodstock, NL A0K 5X0.
Gid’s family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses responsible for his outstanding care at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor.
