Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Donovan on Tuesday, the 19th of July. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Jane Donovan (Gallant); sons, Shamus (Zelia) & Jon (Amanda) Donovan; his 3 granddaughters, Ira, Caya & Emily; and sisters, Cathy Brittain (Brian), Debbie Boudreau (Rino), and Mary Hewey (Wayne), and nieces and nephews.
He grew up on Main Street in the Fairville area of West Saint John and attended Vocational School. He had a brief stint in the Navy and was on his way to Australia before his little white lie about his age was discovered and he was given a “free” trip home. From there, he returned to school and graduated from MNHS before attending St. Thomas University in Fredericton.
He began his career in the electrical trade working with his father-in-law, Byron Gallant at Quality Electric. He worked for many years in the Saint John and the surrounding areas. Apart from being an electrician, he taught electrical at NBCC Saint John and finally at Home Depot, where Jane always teased him that he was getting paid to talk to people.
He and Jane raised their family in the Baxters Corner area, where he developed numerous long-lasting friendships. Countless memories, good times and stories were born on the Quaco Road. Once the nest was empty, he and Jane moved to their little piece of paradise on Treadwell Lake, where family and friends were always welcome for a cold beverage, BBQ and a swim.
His love of music (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elton John and Queen) was always evident as he was often the center of attention impersonating the late, great Freddie Mercury. When it came to travelling, he was lucky enough to have had the chance to visit Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, the UK, Singapore, Hawaii & Florida, and from coast to coast here in Canada. He really enjoyed the local cuisines & cultures. Some of the more memorable trips were taken together with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John & Susan McCaustlin. Immediately following one trip to Florida, Susan & Jane quickly determined that Jerry & John could not be left alone.
He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of arguing and doing the completely unexpected. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support in recent times as it really meant a lot to us.
All are welcome to attend a gathering in his honor this coming Sunday, the 24th of July at the H.O.P.E Centre (St. Joseph’s Church at 4347 Loch Lomond Road) between 1:00 – 3:00pm.
