who passed away at Health Sciences North on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.
Loving husband of Irene Gresdal (nee Uzicanin) (predeceased) and partner of Vivianne Larocque. Beloved father of Dean Gresdal (Sheila Mulvihill predeceased) (Margaret). Cherished “Grandpa” of Devlin, Rebecca, Kiefer and Trevor (Jane). Dear son of Clarence and May Ruth Gresdal (both predeceased). Treasured brother of Vivian (predeceased) (Archie), Eleanor (Tommy predeceased) and Donnie (Kelly) and will be deeply missed by his brother-in-law Ernie (Lori). Will be especially missed by all of his extended Larocque family as well as his many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Gary was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on January 15th, 1947. He spent his childhood growing up in Terrace Bay, Ontario, where he excelled at numerous sports, especially hockey. After signing with the Montreal Canadiens organization at the age of 14, Gary pursued a career in hockey, playing professionally for many years. He played the game with a rugged passion, posting a record 394 penalty minutes during one season in the Eastern Hockey League – one of the leagues on which the movie Slapshot was based. While being as tough as they came on the exterior, he had a huge, kind heart and was deeply loved everywhere he went.
After retiring from hockey, Gary began a career in sales and management at Alcan Building Products (eventually becoming Gentek Building Products) in Sudbury. He relied on his amazing gift for connecting with people to excel in this role.
Gary was a true ‘people-person’ and was able to talk to anyone in any situation. He loved a good time and wanted everyone around him to enjoy themselves as much as possible as well. He valued his relationships with family and friends above everything else. He was always willing to provide some comforting words, some wise advice or to just make you laugh. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In celebration of his life, friends may join the Gresdal and Larocque families at the Caruso Club, Heritage Hall (Lower Hall) on Friday, March 18th from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. for some food, hugs and few laughs – just the way Gary would have wanted it.
