Gordon Edwin (Ted) Brown December 4, 1932 – May 20, 2020
After a brief illness, Gordon Edwin (Ted)Brown passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. Ted will be lovingly remembered by his children Doug, Kevin(Angela), Don, Karen (Scott), and Diane (John), grandchildren Mathew (Chantel), Christian, Renée (Simon), Jonathan, Sean, Alex, Jason, Lee (Kylie), Nikki (Andrew), and great-grandchildren Mia, Jett and Kaiden, many in-laws, nieces, nephews and close family friends. He was pre-deceased by wives Anne and Enid, daughter Kathy, parents George and Stella and brothers Jim and Norman.
Ted was born in Winnipeg where he spent his early years. His family moved to Brandon and finally settled in Hartney where Ted finished his schooling. At a young age, Ted began working on construction for Manitoba Telephone System. He was promoted to Linesman and Repair and had many posts across Western Manitoba. Ted and his growing family settled in Pilot Mound in 1962. Ted retired from MTS in 1990 with recognition of 40 years of service.
Ted is fondly remembered as the Piper from Pilot Mound. He honoured his father’s Scottish heritage through learning to play the bagpipes as a young boy. Ted was a member of multiple pipe bands including the 26thField Regiment, the Winnipeg Mass Pipes and Drums and the Brandon Shrine Pipes and Drums. Highlights for Ted included piping at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, the Spokane World’s Fair and the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade.
Ted played solo pipes for numerous special occasions throughout Southern Manitoba. Weddings, funerals, Armistice Day Ceremonies, curling bonspiels, parades and other events would see Ted in full regalia sharing his music. A musical highlight for Ted was playing Highland Cathedral together with Anne.
Ted was a dedicated member of the local Masonic Lodge. He was honoured in 2017 for 50 years of membership. Ted also joined the Royal Arch and the Shriners. Ted took a lot of pride in being a Mason and valued the camaraderie and community these organizations provided.
Ted was a proud citizen of Pilot Mound. He took an active role in his children’s lives through coaching and managing hockey and baseball teams and attending performances across the province. He volunteered at many community events and regularly supported community initiatives. In 2010, Ted and Anne were recognized for their volunteerism by the Pilot Mound Chamber of Commerce.
Ted’s family would like to thank Dr Nejad and the staff at Rock Lake Hospital for their care in Dad’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pilot Mound and District Foundation would be appreciated. Box 235 Pilot Mound, Manitoba R0G 1P0
