Florence Sheppard Brinston (née Emberley)
(May 3, 1931 – December 25, 2022)
Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge, St John’s on Sunday, December 25th, 2022 at the age of 91, in the presence of her family.
Born in Lamaline, Newfoundland, Florence lived a long life, having moved to St. John’s at the age of 16 as a young girl. She attended college and went on to become a psychiatric nursing assistant, and a wife and mother. Florence led a very active life, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed camping, weekends at the cabin, bowling, walking, tai chi, darts, cards, dances at The Legion, gardening, and time near the ocean.
Predeceased by: her husband, Laurence (1967); son, Carl (2012); great-granddaughter Rowan (2022); parents Henry and Whilmena Emberley; mother in-law and father in-law, Lena and Albert Brinston; brothers Clyde (Joan),Walter (Annie) Malcolm; and sisters Daisy (Ben), Lulu (George), Cora, Eva (Cyril), Margaret (Myril).
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories: her son Lloyd; daughters Barb and Gail; grandchildren Sydney, Kim (Sam), Adam; great-grandchildren Spencer and Quinn; a large circle of nieces and nephews; and many family and friends, including special friends at Rotary Manor and Glenbrook Lodge.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Glenbrook Lodge for their care and compassion to Florence over the last several months, especially Kim and Gloria for their personal touch of care. Gratitude is offered to the doctors and nursing staff at 4NA at the Health Sciences Center.
The family would also like to extend their thanks for the empathetic and compassionate caregivers who looked after Florence over the years, including Gail, Sydney, Laura, Elizabeth and Joan. You are all angels on Earth!
Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Hamilton Avenue on Friday, December 30, from 11AM-9PM. Service will be held in the chapel at Barrett’s at 11AM on Saturday, December 31, with burial to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, flowers will be gratefully accepted, or a donation can be made to the charity of one’s choice if you desire.
