Florence Ellen “Helen” (MacDonald) Gillis 86, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2022 surrounded by family. Mom was a resident of Foyer Père Fiset in Cheticamp and Inverness Manor for the past few years; but lived on the Shore Road since 1970, beside her sister Rose, where they raised their kids together.
She was the daughter of the late Angus D. and Margaret MacDonald and was raised with her seven siblings in Harbourview.
She made her six kids her whole life.She cooked, she baked, she sewed, she raised six kids to be strong independent adults. Mom spoke to all of us almost every day; the connection was strong.
Mom is survived by her six children, JD(Donna); Stephen(Geraldine); Allan(Sandra); Margie(Bill); RoseAnn and Leonard (Jan); her 16 grandchildren; 25 1/2 great grandchildren; sisters, Rose MacInnis and Elizabeth Coprez; her brother, Syl MacDonald; and many nieces and nephews who knew her as, “Auntie Wae”.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Angus and Margaret, her brothers Doddy, John Francis, Neily and Cameron.
Visitation will take place on Friday, October14, 2022 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at Port Hood & Area Resting Place. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 11:00am from St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood. Reception will be held immediately after Mass at St. Peter’s Parish Hall. Cremation and burial at a later date.
A special Thank You goes to the nursing staff at both Foyer Père Fiset and Inverness Manor. You all are amazing!!
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who are able instead make a donation to Inverness Palliative Care.
