Estelle Lamswood nee Barnes September 15 1929 to September 8 2022

Passed peacefully away surrounded by her loving family at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home after a brief illness on September 8, 2022, Estelle Lamswood (Barnes), of Topsail one week before her 93rd birthday.
Born in Topsail to Nellie and Frank Barnes, she was the last surviving of a family of seven children. Frank served in the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit in Scotland and Nellie volunteered with the Red Cross during the Second World War. Predeceased by her husband Ananias “Brud” in 1972; parents Nellie & Frank Barnes; sisters Audrey (Ted) Withers, Joyce (Jack) Scott, Olga (Dick) Barnes, and Cammie Collins; brothers Harrison and Weston Barnes; mother-in-law Mary Jane Lamswood; sister-in-law Doris Boone; brothers-in-law William Lamswood (Hilda Mercer), and Clayton Boone; nieces Pamela “Pammy” Barnes, Eleanor Scott, and Elaine Boone; and nephew Roger Barnes.
Leaving to mourn her loss and celebrate her life are daughters Anita (Fred) Sullivan, Brenda (Todd) Fiander; son Harrison (Beverlee); her beloved grandchildren Kirk (Katie) Sullivan, Karolyn Sullivan, Jae Smith, Candice Hutchings, Nicholi Noel, Brandon Noel, Nakita Hutchings; and great-grandchildren Mary and Oscar Sullivan, Aaron Hutchings, and Evelyn Smith; Harrison & Beverlee’s children Robert, Joel (Amy), Jeremy, and grandchildren Arivis and Fern; sister-in-law Patricia Barnes; brother-in-law Raymond Collins; and “Aunt Essie’s” many special nieces and nephews of whom she thought so much.
Estelle was a long-time member of the Topsail Anglican Church Women’s Association where she volunteered for many years. She was also a Canadian Blood Services Volunteer. She had an amazing work ethic, wanted things done properly, and didn’t mind telling you if it was wrong. She loved her immediate and extended family, enjoyed when they visited, and always had time for a chat to hear how they were doing. She loved to prepare food, especially cold plates, homemade bread, fruit cakes, and cookies. She loved to laugh and carry on, and loved living in Topsail where she resided until April this year. In recent years, she put together many jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed being outdoors in her garden and making sure it was kept up. She dearly loved animals, always wanted to feed the birds, and enjoyed visits by Karolyn’s dog Breeze at her house and St. Patrick’s Home.
A special thank you to neighbours and friends Sharon and Doug Whelan, Jo-Anne and Lorne Stone, Dr. Dan Malone, Bonny MacNeil, Dr. Sandy Innes, Dr. Stephanie Genge, Gertie Duggan, the staff of 2 North and 3 East West St. Patrick’s Home, 7 West and 4 West St. Clare’s Hospital for their kindness and caring to Mom.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, September 10th, and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, September 11th. Funeral service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church, Topsail on Monday, September 12th, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Philips Anglican Cemetery.
Mom always saw the good in others and did her best to help those in need. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her memory to St. John the Evangelist Church Topsail or do a kind deed for someone, anyone, and think of our dear mother.
