It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a good and faithful man, Bruce Ramshaw of Edmonton.
Bruce will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 54 years, of Edmonton; sons Robert (Heather) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Gregory (Shawna) of Clemson, South Carolina; and grandsons Ruairi of Halifax and Sebastian of Clemson.
He is predeceased by his mother, Caroline, and father, Ernest.
Bruce was born in Saskatoon and remained one of Saskatchewan’s most passionate ambassadors throughout his life. Though he treasured the woodlands near Love, the Saskatchewan village nearest his family’s homestead, the wider world beckoned to him. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960, serving until 1965. He then moved to Edmonton and began working at Canadian Electronics, where he met Mary. They married in 1968. He later worked at Smalleys Electronics until 1977 when he and two partners started Westcan Two-Way Radio (now Westcan ACS), later expanding to include Allcan Electronic Distributors. Though starting a small business and raising a family, Bruce and Mary never really stopped seeing the world. They visited every continent (most of them more than once), travelling right up until the present year.
Bruce served many different roles throughout his marvellously interesting life. Beyond his role as an owner and operator of several successful businesses, he dedicated much of his time to volunteer service, in particular dedicating his time to the Knights of Columbus Hockey Association, the Alberta Aviation Museum, and the Telus World of Science. He was a devout Catholic. He was a philanthropist, raising money for causes nearest his heart. And, of course, he was a gifted storyteller. Bruce seemed to know everyone, and everywhere. He would learn where a person was from and instantly regale them with stories of their hometown; of landmarks and events, streets and neighbourhoods, and all the characters who lived within. He put people at ease and made them feel important. This was perhaps his greatest gift and most magnificent talent.
Bruce’s family would like to thank the staff and care team at The Edmonton General Hospital, Extended Care Unit (9C) and Palliative Care Unit (9Y) where Bruce resided during his final months of illness. The compassion, dedication, and kindness you showed our entire family is greatly appreciated.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home (10011-114 Street Edmonton) on Monday, November 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bruce’s memory can be made to The Alberta Aviation Museum, The Salvation Army, or a charity that is meaningful to you.
