With deep sadness, the family of Edward Herchak announce his passing at the age of 85. His health had been declining, and he passed away in his sleep early Wednesday, September 12, 2022, at Sturgeon Community Hospital.
Ed was born in 1937 to Wasyl and Agatha, and grew up on their family farm near Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, along with 9 brothers and 2 sisters. He always remained a country boy at heart. At age 18 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He quickly earned the crossed-rifle emblem of a marksman, always spoke proudly of his ship, HMCS Fraser, and fondly kept souvenirs from the many places he visited while serving his country.
After the Navy, he settled in Calgary where he framed houses with his brother Jim, and where he met Marjorie, who he married in 1962. In 1971 Ed and Marge moved to Winfield, BC, where he began installing flooring with his brother Mike, an occupation he kept until his retirement. Ed and Marge also lived in Vernon, Blind Bay, and Kamloops (BC), and recently moved to St. Albert, Alberta to be closer to family.
Ed is remembered by Marge, and by their children, Jim (Lenore) and Dianne (Kelly, Chelsea), brothers Roman (Theresa) and Robert (Lorain), grandchildren Andrew, Nicky and Cody, great-grandchildren, Keenan, Asher, Micah, Luca and Mia, and many, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ed’s family especially thanks his doctors, nurses and support workers, including the staff at Chartwell St. Albert Retirement Residence, Cross Cancer Clinic, and Sturgeon Community Hospital.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Dr, St. Albert, on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
