Obituary
Donald Elston Blosser passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022 with his children and close family by his side.
Don was born in Victoria, BC to Frank and Jean Blosser on July 9, 1949. As his father was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Navy, his early years involved living in many cities from coast to coast, including New Westminster, Halifax, and Hamilton Ontario. The young family which now included his younger brother Ken landed back in Victoria in 1957. Don spent several years in the Queen Alexandra Solarium (presently the Queen Alexandra Children’s Health Centre), where improving medical innovations allowed him to overcome his severe asthma and allergies. Frank, being very insistent that Don not be a victim of his medical conditions, made many sacrifices to ensure Don attended the St. Michaels University School. Don was very grateful to his parents for his time there. Don attended Oak Bay High School where he made life long friendships and graduated in the spring of 1968. During his school years he was an active member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and in High School he enjoyed rock n roll, longboarding and working as a valet. He attended one year at the University of Victoria studying fine arts, many of the products of which still adorn his walls. During his University time he was a busboy (with many exciting adventures) at the Empress Hotel in Victoria.
He set off on his own in 1969, travelling to Alberta for an introductory stint in the oilfield, which was followed up with an introduction to the music industry. His music industry connection had him travel to Vancouver and then on to Prince George where he managed the Kelly Stereo Mart (a fabulous industry to be a part of in the early 1970’s). Eventually he started at the pulp mill in Prince George.
Don met and married Cheryl Ziola from Kelvington and after living in Prince George for a short time, they moved to Edmonton as Cheryl was accepted into medical school at the University of Alberta. Don worked at Turbo refineries until he eventually got involved with the Alberta oilfield hotshot game, including starting and running his own hot shot company.
Don’s second marriage to Teresa Goddard in 1981 resulted in Don’s two proudest achievements: The birth of Breann Kimberly in 1984 and Tristan Elston in 1986. Don’s young family moved out of Edmonton to Bruderhiem in 1989, where the kids started their small town elementary school careers.
After a short stint as a water treatment technician and a long haul driver, Don started dispatching for Schlumberger in 1991. He maintained the dispatch operations until his retirement in 2019. In that time, he revolutionized wireline dispatch and journey management through programming and computerization that was eventually adopted around the world and is still utilized today. He made many lifelong friends and has shared many great stories about his Schlumberger time (from both hotshotting and dispatching days). Many will remember him for his abrupt get down to business attitude, but also for his generosity and wonderful leadership.
He instilled his love for good music and driving in his children, whom he shared many long driving vacations with throughout their childhood and teenage years. He loved to share his love of music with his beautiful grandchildren Cecilia (2009) and Kate (2013), who will always remember their kitchen dance parties with Grandpa Don.
As per Don’s request, there will be no funeral service held
