Obituary
BOWLES, Deborah Anne (Perry) – 68, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister, Debbie, on November 2nd, 2022, at her home in Shelburne with family by her side. Born June 5th, 1954 in Shelburne, she was the third daughter of Edwin and Mabel Perry of Ingomar, N.S.
She spent her early years in Ingomar where life was casual and fun, with a one room school house, a church & Sunday school, a general store, lots of friends, and a great community where everyone knew everyone. She spent her younger years learning to garden with her mother and aunts, using her imagination to develop a love for writing and when she was only 10 years old she began fishing around the nets in her Fathers fishing boat for the next five summers.
When Debbie was 16, she would spend her summers working in Barrie, Ontario, with her relatives. She would return in the fall to complete her high school education at SRHS before returning to Barrie, where she worked and later met her future husband Gary, and raised her family.
Debbie worked as a telephone operator for Bell Canada, when the operator still needed to connect you manually. Later she worked as a correctional officer at the Barrie Jail where she was one of the first female officers hired to work with the male inmates. For many years, Debbie was an active member of the Barrie Art Club, holding most positions including President during her time there. In 2002, Debbie returned home to be closer to her family.
She was an artist who loved experimenting with all mediums, painting and creating with passion and love. Debbie was very involved with the local drama group, Basement theatre, where she acted and created costumes. She loved the whirligig festivals and contributed her work there yearly. Debbie wants people to remember she was a movie star, appearing in Wilby Wonderful and as an extra in Moby Dick.
Debbie had a kind, generous, giving spirit and was helpful to anyone in need. She loved a good party, singing and dancing whenever she could. She had the ability to make people feel welcomed and loved.
She leaves to mourn, her children; Gavin, Edwin, and Sarah, her siblings; Janet, Nancy, Wendell, Eddie and Alice, her grandson; Gryphon Derlis in Ontario, Bobby, and her many friends near and far. She was predeceased by her parents Edwin and Mabel Perry.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. Cremation has taken place. A Ceremony of Remembrance will take place on November 20th, 2022 at the Lion’s Hall, 188 Elliott St. in Shelburne. Donations in memory of Deborah can be made to the Shelburne County Arts Council.
