David Anthony “Michael” DeWolf, 69, passed away peacefully in Mississauga Trillium Hospital, surrounded by his family on April 13, 2022. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Dave managed his illness with strength and grace. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather right to the end. On his final day, Dave was surrounded by his wife and children who he adored more than anything else in the world.
Born in Unity, Saskatchewan, Dave is survived by his loving wife Karen “Powell” Miller; his son Phillip DeWolf, Phillip’s wife Sandra DeWolf and grandson Ethan (age 10)- Toronto; Daughter Angela DeWolf and grandson Avery Smeth (age 15)- Ottawa; Stepdaughters Kristan Miller -Vancouver; Tara Davidson and husband James Davidson- Penhold Alberta; Brothers: Peter DeWolf and wife Susan DeWolf- Keremeos, BC; Rick DeWolf and wife Cheryl DeWolf- Parksville BC. In addition, Dave is also survived by his favorite “Fur-person”- Bailey, the family golden retriever. Dave was predeceased by his parents, Helena (Tookie) and Edward (Ted) DeWolf; brother Terrance (Terry) DeWolf.
Dave graduated in 1974 with his B. Comm and in 1975 completed his CA (chartered accountant) both from Sir George William University, (Concordia); Dave’s Mom Tookie was always proud to brag that her son graduated in the top 10 of CA’s in Canada.
In 2011 Dave retired in the position of Senior Audit Partner at Ernst & Young, after 37 years of service to that company. Starting in 1974, he joined Clarkson Gordon in Montreal which later became Ernst & Young. He worked across the country from Calgary to Toronto and in 1985 he became partner. He was the lead audit partner for public companies in the manufacturing, life sciences, technologies and natural resource sectors. Dave also travelled the world representing Ernst & Young, to such places as: Congo, Vietnam, Columbia, Ukraine, Norway, Chile, UK, France and was temporarily trapped in New York during 911. With so much international travel, his family often joked that he was secretly a spy.
Dave had a decorated and interesting professional career, with many volunteer director positions on boards for the fine arts.
In addition to his career achievements, one of Dave’s biggest accomplishments was being a “Father”. Dave felt blessed to have 2 children, Angela and Phillip. They considered their dad to be their superhero, and even as adults they still see their dad that way. He was, without fail, always there for them throughout life’s ups and downs. Dave taught his children many valuable lessons in life, to be loving, ethical and professional people. But mostly he taught them by example to enjoy every moment life has to offer.
Dave’s love of family became further blessed when he married the junior high school love of his life. His dedication and adoration for his wife Karen was truly over the moon. Their union grew their family from three to six. Dave loved being a “bonus” Dad to his stepdaughters Kristan and Tara. As a family, their favorite activities included lots of jokes, playing 25 Words or Less and Dave was the undisputed family Jeopardy champion.
There can be no greater joy in one’s life than sharing it with grandchildren. The bond between grandfather and grandson is one of life’s truest forms of love. Dave’s two grandsons, Avery and Ethan, lit up Dave’s world and supplied him with endless joy. The boys desire to spend time with Grandad was a testimony to the dedication and love they all shared.
As long as we remember a person, they are never really gone. Their thoughts, their feelings and memories become a part of us. To honor Dave’s memory, we encourage everyone to share stories about Dave to keep his memory alive. To uphold our collective precious memories, let’s all continue to tell the stories of his life, which include the funny texts he continuously sent everyone and his never miss “well wishes” to each family member on all occasions, such as birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc.
One of Dave’s greatest stories is how generous he was. All who knew him well would agree that generosity was his superpower. He was a notoriously generous tipper. Pretty sure he is already taking care of generous tips in heaven.
Special thanks to the staff at Mississauga Trillium Hospital on 6J and ICU, as well as EMS. For those who wish, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation.
