Obituary of Chris Alan Jeans
Chris Alan Jeans passed away peacefully in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on March 31, 2022 after a short and sudden illness.
Chris was born on July 23, 1948 in Botwood, NL to Guy and Lillian Jeans (nee Whitworth). Having been born before confederation, he proudly referred to himself as a “true” Newfoundlander. Chris loved the tranquility of salmon fishing or walking through the woods rabbit snaring. He was also an avid reader, reading whole books in one sitting. His favourite books were on the topic of hunting, fishing, or the history of Newfoundland.
Chris loved word puzzles – devouring book after book of crossword puzzles, logic problems, and any other kind of puzzle that required sitting quietly and pondering. Anybody that spent time around Chris at one of his favourite spots – his cabin on Western Arm Brook – would remember him sitting in a chair in the shade, wearing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, a drink sitting on a table nearby, with his crossword book and pen in hand.
Chris studied Instrumentation and Control Engineering at the College of the North Atlantic and was an Instrument Technician with Abitibi Price for many years. After early retirement, Chris and his wife of 51 years, Margaret, completed the Diploma Program in Theology and Ministry at the Atlantic School of Theology.
Those who knew him well knew that Chris was a man of few words, but when he used those words, they often carried power. Ever a thought-filled man, during his early retirement years Chris was a lay-minister at the local United Church, spending hours diligently reading and crafting services that were thoughtful and touching.
Chris Jeans was a loving son and brother, a devoted and loyal husband, an incredible and caring father, and a wonderful human being.
Chris is survived by his wife Margaret of 51 years, his daughter Angela Roberts and her family – husband Brian, son Kyle (Jessica), and Kayla (Dawson), and his first great-grandchild Griffin –, his son Alan and his wife Lisa, his siblings Peggy (Eric), Barb (Cal), Barry (Deb), Janet (Al), and many nieces, nephews, and extended family that loved him.
Chris has requested that you remember him in your own private way, and that his funeral remain a small group of invited family and friends.
Chris has requested that everybody is safe during his funeral, so masks will be required.
Funeral service will be held at Hoskins Funeral Home on April 5, at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Mission and Service fund at the Grand Falls-Windsor United Church.
Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
By Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
