THOMAS, Christopher James – it is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Chris Thomas at the Delhi Long Term Care Home on Monday, December 19th, 2022, two days before his 76th birthday. Predeceased by his father Floyd (1977), his mother Isabel (1992), and his sister Kathy Kilbourne (2015). He is survived by his brother Mark Thomas (Angie Vehrs), his nephews Christopher Thomas (Lorna), Justin Lichach, Tom Kilbourne and Ryan Kilbourne. Also fondly remembered by numerous great nieces and nephews. Chris was a local legend and icon. He was well-known across Norfolk County thanks to a long career as a newspaper reporter, first with the Delhi News-Record, then for 33 years with the Simcoe Reformer. He retired in 2006 and for years afterwards was still remembered for his famous Talk to Thomas columns that saw readers write in with comments and questions. During his working years, he covered just about everything, from town council to the tobacco industry to murder trials. Chris was often the lead writer for the Reformer’s agriculture and Norfolk County Fair editions. Chris was also active in the community. He volunteered for various fundraisers (he once rode the ferris wheel at the Norfolk County Fair non-stop for hours on end to raise donations for a food bank). Chris also helped start the annual Robbie Burns Nights as well as the Norfolk Scotch Society and was a member of the Norfolk Historical Society board of directors. Theatre audiences will remember Chris for his hilarious performances in numerous comedies at Simcoe Little Theatre over many years. Chris had an active social life and was a fixture in downtown Simcoe’s night life during its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, earning him the title of “Simcoe’s oldest teenager.” Wherever he went, Chris spread joy and fun, and made fast friends. In his presence, the atmosphere was always light and down to earth. Chris was a respected journalist and much-loved by everyone. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and the community at large. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Delhi Long Term Care for their care and compassion during Chris’ stay. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date where everyone can share their stories and memories of Chris. RIP Chris. We will miss you.
