CARMINE BOTTICCHIO JULY 16, 1930 – OCTOBER 1, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce Carmine Botticchio passed peacefully on October 1st, surrounded by his wife Giuseppina (née Corvetti) and children.
Over 64 years of marriage, Carmine & Giuseppina are blessed with a beautiful family of four children, Elvira (Ron), Connie (Mario), Tony (Rita) and Franca (Paolo), and 11 grandchildren Lara (Michael), Gianluca, Cassandra, Francesco, Olivia, Stefano, Christina, Anthony, Alessia, Alessandro and Serena, and great-grandchild Isabella.
Born in Pescina (AQ), Italy on July 16, 1930, to Franco and Concetta Botticchio, Carmine was one of seven children – predeceased by Roberto, Sandra and Anna Lucia, and survived by Maria (Sandro – d), Pasquale (Ida) and Antonio (Gianna).
In search of more opportunity and prosperity he immigrated to Toronto in 1953, where he took on his first job as a plasterer (noting that he and a crew could finish a house in a day). After saving up enough money to start a more ambitious venture, Carmine and his brother-in-law Pompeo Troiani ((d) (Sandra (d)), started up Capri Grocery (located at Dufferin and Rogers, in operation until 1977).
Alas, work wasn’t enough, and Carmine travelled back to Pescina in 1958 – and it didn’t take long to find his soul-mate Giuseppina. They soon married and settled back in Toronto to start their family.
Opportunity called again and in 1977, Carmine, Pompeo and Pasquale founded Valencia Foods, a successful chain of supermarkets. Carmine loved the business and dedicated long hours at what was a passion until he retired in 1989. He built strong relationships and earned respect amongst customers, employees, suppliers and other Italian supermarket operators – many of whom became lifelong friends.
Carmine was a patient man, self taught and always a wealth of knowledge. Side by side with his wife he enjoyed regular trips to their hometown to reconnect with their roots; they vacationed down south and always had numerous social activities to host or attend with their many close friends (social club parties, picnics, dinners, bocce, ”trentuno”), and a very long stretch as members of “the Tuesday night bowling league”.
Carmine cherished gatherings with his family as often as possible and especially for holidays and family celebrations. Giuseppina loved Carmine dearly and unconditionally – they were always together and provided each other strength.
He enjoyed a fulfilling life and was able to perform his own routines at home right up until his final days. Carmine will be sadly missed by his family, and many friends who will continue to cherish his memory.
If desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family.
