It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom, who left this world surrounded by family and love, at home, in Kingman’s Cove, Fermeuse, just as she wanted.
She was 94 years old and with full hearts we look back on a life well lived.
The youngest of seven children, Mom was born across the harbour in Admiral’s Cove, now Port Kirwan, in 1928, and married our Dad, Martin Walsh in 1949. Together they built an incredible life and filled their house with eleven children and welcomed hundreds more.
Mom knew what life was about. She touched the heart and soul of everyone she knew. No one was turned away or left the house with an empty stomach. She welcomed all our friends from near and far and she often said, “I never knew who was going to be on the couch when I came down the stairs in the morning.”
Mom was an amazing person. Such an incredible life force that surrounded us all with her love and support, and we always felt so inspired by her strength and dedication to her family, her friends, and her community. She ran a business and a home simultaneously; she was a long-time member of the WI, she loved to knit and sew, and her attention to detail was impeccable.
Mom was our family “Google”. Her wealth of genealogical knowledge and community history was surpassed by no-one. She felt a strong pride in family and never let distance stand in the way of connection. She kept in touch with us all – from handwritten letters to her sisters “away”, to daily phone calls. Of course, not a day went by that she didn’t speak to her lifelong friends, Mary Lawlor and Catherine Brophy, along with others, (you know who you are). Even the recent Zoom phenomenon became a medium she did not shy away from, which allowed us all to “see” each other especially during the recent pandemic restrictions.
Family meant everything and the walls and side-tables of her home are filled with framed pictures of family. From her parents, to her children plus the many grandchildren and great grandchildren, Mom loved these reminders of the family that she and Dad created in Kingman’s Cove.
We were fortunate that Mom was able to stay in her home, and for the last three years she has been loved and supported by an incredible team of homecare workers. A very special thank you to Virginia, Georgina, Jeannie and Stella who, along with caring for Mom’s physical needs, became true friends who enriched mom’s days in immeasurable ways. It gave us all great comfort knowing that Mom was in such great hands, and for that we are forever grateful.
Her remaining comfortable in her home over the last 30 plus years was made possible by the love and support from her son-in-law David Croft who never let the wood box go empty, never let the snow settle on the driveway and was always at the ready to take care of “Mrs. Betty”. Mom was often heard saying “I would never be able to stay here if it wasn’t for David”. Please know, David, that your love and respect for mom showed in countless ways and we will always be thankful for everything you did to make her life so comfortable. (PS: how did you make those splits so perfect?)
A very special “thank-you” to her wonderful, lifelong neighbour, Kate (Catherine) Spearns, who’s kindness, compassion and humour was a steadfast comfort. We so very much appreciate all that you are, Kate, and are blessed to have had you so close to Mom’s, and our lives.
Love and support throughout the years were a constant from the Trainor and Walsh families and the wonderful people of Kingman’s Cove.
