With profound sadness we announce the passing of Betty Elaine (Bears) MacPherson, our loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched.
She left us while sleeping peacefully on the palliative care floor of the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 4, 2022 where she spent her last two weeks under the incredible care of the staff on floor 7a. She was in her 77th year.
Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Bears and Maude (Sanderson) Bears. Wife and best friend of Alex James MacPherson, loving mother of Stacey (Thane) Hughes and Corey (Nancy) MacPherson and proud grandmother to Ryley James Hughes and Theron Victor Hughes.
Survived by brother Daniel Bears (Brenda), sister Pauline (Garnet) McIntyre and brother Roy (Marcia) Bears.
Betty began her working career as a legal secretary in Charlottetown before moving to Halifax where she worked in the business office for Ford Motor Credit. When returning to PEI in the early 70’s, she began working at Scotiabank in Montague, PEI where she worked for a number of years before her entrepreneurial spirit took over. Betty and sister Pauline were both avid seamstresses and when unable to source the selection and quality of fabrics they wanted, they decided to open their own shop. Fabrics for Fashion was opened in the Down East Mall in Montague and was a thriving business which met their needs and the needs of sewing enthusiasts on Prince Edward Island. This also gave Betty the opportunity to connect with so many people which she thoroughly enjoyed. When it became time to sell the business, Betty still had a desire to stay connected in her community and returned to work at Scotiabank until her retirement.
She was a skilled baker and cook and loved to share her creations with “Betty’s Buns” among the favourites. An accomplished Bridge player, she loved teaching as well as the challenge of the game, her flair for style was apparent in both her home and her appearance. There was never a dull moment in Alex and her social calendar. Betty lit up a room when she entered and made deep connections with all she touched. She loved, admired and respected the uniqueness of everyone she knew.
Most of all she loved her family and was extremely proud of her two grandsons. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 11th, 6 -8 pm at Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 12th, 11:00 am at St. Agnes Parish, 6903 Mumford Road Halifax with reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
