Bertha Louise Douglas 1939 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce
the passing of our mother, Bertha Louise
Douglas, of Point de Bute, NB on February 9, 2022. We
will greatly miss her sweet and gentle nature and her ever present
laughter.
Bertha was born in Sackville, New
Brunswick on July 6, 1939, the daughter of Wilfred and Florence
(Anderson) Wheaton. She is survived by her two daughters,
Roberta Douglas (Mark) of Ottawa, Ontario, and Rosemary MacEachen
(Alan) of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, and grandson Calum MacEachen,
Mahone Bay, NS, as well as brothers James Wheaton (Shirley) of Point
de Bute, NB and Roland Wheaton (Louise), Cochrane, Alberta, sisters in
law Nancy Durnford Lorimer, Montreal, Heather Douglas, Milton, NS,
nieces Sally Sotnek (Eric), Georgetown, Massachusetts, Megan Durnford
(Larry), Montreal, Kendra Durnford (Mark), Ottawa, and Margaret
Wheaton (Reynolds), Jolicure, NB, nephews Michael Wheaton (Michelle),
Sackville, NB, and Philip Wheaton (Erin), Calgary, Alberta, and many
grand nieces and nephews, including Megan Butcher (Scott), Port Elgin,
NB, and Brynna Wheaton, Calgary, Alberta. She was predeceased by her
husband, Robert William Burke Douglas.
She attended Ogden School in Middle
Sackville and Sackville High School, and graduated from Regional
Memorial School in Port Elgin, NB in 1957. Over the years she enjoyed
secretarial work in Fredericton, Moncton, Wolfville and Mahone Bay,
before returning to Point de Bute. She was active in community, school
and church events and took great pleasure from family and friends,
travel, gardening and cooking, glimpses of herons and foxes, and
sunsets over the Tantramar. She was very interested in the history of
the Tantramar region, and would always stop to photograph lonely
wooden barns and hayfields from days gone by.
The family would like to thank the
excellent Tantramar Region Extra-Mural Team for their help and
support, and Bertha’s caregivers Christine and Sue. Special thanks to
Nursing Home Without Walls Seniors Navigator Terissa Salmon for her
guidance in helping us to navigate the supports available which
enabled us to fulfill our mother’s wish of remaining in her home until
the end.
Memorial donations may be made to the
Tantramar Historical Trust, Sistema New Brunswick (which provides free
music education and instruments to students in New Brunswick schools),
your local SPCA, or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St.,
Sackville (506-364-1300) where visitation will be held on Sunday,
February 20, 2022 from 2 to 4 pm. Please come by to share your
remembrances of Bertha and enjoy light refreshments. Masks, proof of
vaccination, and government ID will be mandatory.
Interment will be at Four Corners
Burying Ground, Upper Sackville, NB, at a later date.
Sharing of memories and condolences may
be sent to the family by visiting Bertha’s online memorial at
