Mom has joined Dad on eagles wings to soar up into heaven.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our precious mother, nana, sister and friend, Bernadette Marie Kennedy of Port Hawkesbury on April 5, 2022 at St Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish at the age of 88.
Bernadette Marie was the first child born to Thomas Hureau and Sarah ‘Sadie’ MacDonald on 19 Feb 1934 in their home in Hureauville, Nova Scotia. She grew up there with her five siblings, her parents and her grandmother in the family home which still stands to this day. She went to school in a one room school house in Lower River Inhabitants until she was 14. She completed Grade 12 in Sydney graduating from Holy Angels School about 1950 and then went on to Normal College in Truro at the age of 16. She graduated in 1953. She taught one year in Lower River and then went on to attend Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax where she not only received her degree in 1956, she met James (Jim) Francis Kennedy. She taught in Halifax for a time until Jim could complete his degree and a short stint with the Air Force. They were married in Lower River Inhabitants on 5 Sep 1959. Dad got a job with Nova Scotia Power based out of Port Hawkesbury so that became their home for the rest of their lives.
Mom became a full-time Mom with 6 kids in 8 years (and one a little later). She would always have lunches ready for us (incl Dad) every school/work day and desserts with almost every evening meal. She hosted huge family get togethers during the holidays and birthday celebrations throughout the year. She somehow managed to keep up with all of us. She helped make us Halloween costumes every year, figure skating dresses, and eventually prom dresses. We were all involved in different sports and interests. She was always there to help us with homework. Somehow she managed to find time to join several groups, Strait Area Right to Life and St Josephs prayer meetings. She often travelled to attend prayer conferences when we got older. She never faltered in her faith. She and Dad enjoyed playing bridge with the neighbours. Something they did on the weekends while we were tucked away watching a hockey game or movie. We always had a family summer vacation away for a week or two, often to Prince Edward Island with our neighbours, the Johnston’s. We loved our beach days. As grandchildren came along, she and Dad would travel across Canada to see everyone. She loved all us equally and with her whole being. It gave her so much pleasure to have us all gathered together in the same place at the same time which we have been able to do for the most part in the more recent summers.
She leaves behind her children: Susan (David), Chris (Jacqui), Kathy, Jackie (Dave), Sean (Andrea) and Janice as well as daughter-in-law, Angie. Her grandchildren: Rebecca, Nick, Ryan, Hadley, Pauline, Jeremy, Sydney, Kaitlyn, Juliet, Andrew, James and Lauchie. One great-grandchild, Benjamin. She is also survived by her sisters, Shirley and Lee Hureau, and brother, Andrew. She will be missed by all of us. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by our father, Jim Kennedy in 2000, and our brother Rob in 2020 as well as her brothers Paul and Tommy Hureau.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Strait Area Right to Life or your local food bank. There will be a celebration of life at a later date to be announced.
Visitation is Sun Apr 10 at Greens Funeral Home from 2-7 pm. Funeral will be held at St Joseph’s Church in Port Hawkesbury Apr 12 at 10:00am.
