Obituary of Angela Myra Wellman
WELLMAN – Angela Myra (nee Ham) of Port Stanley passed away peacefully on August 28, 2022 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of William John Wellman. Angela will be missed by her nephew James Ham; nieces Joanna Sutton, Rebecca Lightfoot, Charlotte Morris Watson, and Jenny Ham; great nephews Will Sutton, and Joshua Buil; and by her great nieces Lexi Ham and Megan Sutton. Angela was born on June 13, 1935 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. She was the eldest daughter of the late Myra and Harold George Ham. Angela was educated at Bristol University, where she obtained her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and a Ph D in Mycology. Angela and John Wellman of Little Cornard were married on September 5, 1959 in Sudbury Suffolk. They immigrated to Canada where Angela had a National Research Council Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario, London in the Botany Department. Angela was offered a position as an Instructor in Botany, Biology, Mycology, and Microbiology. Eventually Angela accepted a 5 year term as Assistant and then Associate Dean of Science. Angela served on many departmental, Faculty of Science and Senate committees, especially those concerned with education. She represented the University of Western Ontario on the Council of Ontario Universities for two years as their senate representative. Angela resigned from the University of Western Ontario in 1981 so that she and her husband could spend more time cruising and travelling. She and John were avid sailors. Her husband John built and designed many of their boats, and the pair sailed the south west USA, Mexico, Europe, New Zealand, Western Samoa, and Hawaii together. In 1989 they started sailing to the North Channel of Lake Huron each summer. Their love of Manitoulin and the North Channel led to them buying and restoring an old ski club on McLean’s Mountain. Angela also enjoyed nature, photography, reading, antiques, needlework, survival skills and homemaking. Angela was an active member in St John’s Presbyterian Church Port Stanley, where she became an elder and helped to develop a Youth Club. Arrangements entrusted to the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Salvation Army, or to St John’s Presbyterian Church, Port Stanley would be appreciated.
