Obituary
Alf passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2022 at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound. He was predeceased by his dearly loved wife Alexandrena in 2021. Alf is the loving father of John Schillaci (Diane), Judith Durette (Barry), Janice Schillaci, Jim Schillaci, Jane-Ann Schillaci, and Barbara Cecchin (Steve). Alf was the proud grandfather of 9 and great-grandfather of 7. Predeceased by his grandson Jason Schillaci last year.
Alf was born on January 9, 1932, in Toronto. Little did Alf know that his job at Gages Book Binding in Toronto would introduce him to the love of his life, Rena. He cherished their time together, and they would often exchange quick-witted lines with each other with such a similar zest for life. They spent 65 glorious years together. They raised a family, saw much of Canada and the world, and grew old together.
From an early age, Alf developed a love for the Canadian outdoors cultivated by his childhood on the family farm. Memories of caring for animals, plowing, and planting fields, summer swims, winter skating, and sledding were part of his story. As a young man, Alf had a passion for aviation and learned to pilot small planes.
Alf was always tinkering and experimenting. He was enthusiastic about farming, making paper, cheese, potato chips, and wine. He loved to play his organ and even started his own accordion band. He enjoyed keeping busy in his garage building model airplanes, potato boxes, and anything else he fancied. Later in life, Alf turned his attention to painting and shared many of his lovely creations with those he loved.
Alf was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a beer (or two), at a backyard BBQ, at the trailer, or at the kitchen table. He established numerous long-standing friendships everywhere he lived. He had a quick smile, a well-developed sense of humour, and a charm that put people at ease. Alf had a wonderful wit and memory for sharing stories and bits of wisdom with anyone caught within earshot. We all appreciated what he had to say and have been passing on the stories.
Alf can be described in many ways – funny, caring, generous, stubborn, loyal, and most of all humble, as he never expected anything from anyone but was always willing to help someone in need. Alf was a proud man who always wanted to take care of things for the people he loved and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
We know he will continue to watch over us. Rest in peace Alf.

A Memorial Service will be held at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home in Owen Sound on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
