Albert William Johns
February 24, 1933 – November 14, 2022
It is with great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Albert William Johns, 89, on Monday November 14, 2022, at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, Ontario. “Bert” was born on February 24, 1933, in Welland, Ontario and was the dearly loved and only son of the late Alice and Wilfred Johns. He spent his entire life in Port Colborne having grown up on Clare Avenue and built his family home, his pride and joy, right around the corner on Clarence Street. Bert married his high-school sweetheart Patricia Marie (English), on September 29, 1956. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
After working selling shoes while going to PCHS, Bert purchased the store that became “Bert Johns’ Shoe Store” on King Street in 1957 at the age of 24 and happily fitted shoes on feet for 45 years until his retirement in 2002. Bert was known throughout Port Colborne for his jovial and carefree spirit, his generosity and kindness, and his love of talking to people. His quick wit and effortless sense of humour brought smiles and laughter to everyone he encountered. He was a natural born salesman with the gift of the gab and would spend hours chatting politics and current events at daily coffee breaks with fellow shop owners and friends. Bert also greatly appreciated and developed lifelong friendships with the many staff members that worked for him at the shoe store over the years. His warmth and positivity was felt by everyone who was lucky enough to know him. To know Bert was to love Bert.
Patricia (Pat) was the love of his life and he was so proud of the life they built together. He often marveled at Pat’s impressive accomplishments and the way she organized their busy life while also having her own interests and career. They spent many years traveling with their family and friends to Vermont and Cape Cod, returning with a load of maple syrup and always with great memories. Bert’s love of good food was legendary, and you could often find him savouring a nice dinner out at Walters, DJs or Red Lobster. He was an avid reader of news, loved to follow politics, and had a remarkable mind for numbers, dates and, of course, shoe sizes.
Above all else, Bert loved his family and was so proud of the special and close relationship among his five children. He enjoyed talking about just about anything and listening to the many family debates around the dinner table. He would often share stories of family vacations and particularly loved the many special memories of times together at his cherished home on Clarence Street. Bert was a fun-loving grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren telling them creative stories and hearing about their adventures in school and sports.
Bert will be deeply missed by his wife Pat, son Greg, and his daughters Patty (Bill Malloy), Carolyn (John Green), and Marilyn (Dave McGowan) and his grandchildren, Paige, Kate, Mitchell, Jack, and Evan. He joins his beloved eldest daughter Alison in heaven and will be missed by his son-in-law Kurt Stauffert.
The family extends sincere thanks to the staff at Martha’s Landing and the medical team at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington for providing Bert with such kind and compassionate care.
The Johns family will receive visitors at the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Friday, November 18, 2022 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, November 19 at 12:00 pm, following visitation starting at 11:00 am, at Central United Church, where Bert was a Trustee for over 55 years (30 Delhi Street, Port Colborne). Private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to support the Central United Church Memorial Fund, the Bill 7 Award Trust LGBTQ+ Scholarships, or a charity of your choice.
