Obituary
SHEILA WALLACE
It is with sadness that the family announces that Sheila Wallace (nee Lindsay) passed away peacefully at Renfrew Victoria Hospital on Wednesday, March 30th, 2022 at the age of 94.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Dean (Shelley) and Gordon (Beth); grandchildren, Erin, Lauren (Maik), Dianne, Karen (Seth), Allan (Courtney), Scott (Tara); 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband, James “Jim” (July 15, 2012); young son, Lindsay; sisters, Eileen (late Ambrose Bridges), Mona (late Arnell Hill); and infant brother, Kenneth.
Born in Acme, Alberta, Sheila moved to Ontario as a young child when her parents, Hugh and Marion Lindsay, moved to Fraser Road, Burnstown to help with the family farm. She trudged through the bush to attend Public School in Springtown, then boarded in Renfrew until she graduated from Renfrew Collegiate Institute. She then earned her teaching certificate at Ottawa Normal School. She began teaching at RR5 Horton before she was 20 years old. Some of her first students were only a couple of years younger her. She sometimes commented how they caught up to her in age when she met them again at Quail Creek Residence in Renfrew.
Sheila lived for a short period in Sault St. Marie after her marriage to Jim, where he worked at the Algoma steel mill. They then moved to the Wallace family farm on the Queen’s Line, near Cobden, where she lived for over 65 years. She was an equally hard worker as Jim on the farm and, for a period of time, also a part-time teacher. She was well known for her garden produce, baking, and volunteering. Sheila was also very active in the United Church, the UCW, and the Queen’s Line Women’s Institute.
Sheila’s hands were always busy in her ‘spare’ time, knitting, crocheting, and creating elaborate cross-stitch quilts and hangings. She gifted many of her projects to family, who continue to enjoy her handiwork in their homes. Sheila took pleasure in feeding the birds and watching them out her front window. She also worked tirelessly to keep various “critters” out of her garden, leaving a live-trap waiting for unsuspecting raccoons, skunks, and chipmunks. With some amusement, she would drive the chipmunks and drop them off at the back of the farm, joking that there was probably a “chipmunk highway” right back to her garden. She continued to tend her garden and flower beds on the farm until she moved in 2018 to Quail Creek.
Sheila was kind and gentle, firm when necessary, generous and hard-working. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Visitation will be held at the Fraser-Morris & Heubner Funeral Home, 5 Crawford St. Cobden on Tuesday, April 5 from 11am – 2pm followed by a service. Spring interment at Cobden Union Cemetery. Donations in Sheila’s memory may be made to Grace United Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.
