Obituary
Maureen “Peggy” Shepherd (nee Greenidge) passed away unexpectedly on December 26, 2022, at Michael Garron Hospital at the age of 85.
Peggy was born on April 9, 1937, to Delbert and Sylvia Greenidge (nee Beckles) in Barbados, W.I. She was the last of four siblings. She attended St. Matthias Girls Primary School and then went on to The Modern High School on a scholarship. She became a teacher at the Unique High School for a few years until she moved to Toronto, Canada in 1962. She worked for a short period in the office at Steadmans V&S Store. In 1965 she began her career with the Provincial Government. She started at OHIP in the Group Accounts Department as a Clerk and in 1981 moved to Mimico Correctional Facility where she worked in Personnel. After spending over 35 years with the Provincial Government, she retired.
Peggy was a kind and giving person who offered up her home for countless family and friends who needed a temporary place to stay. With Peggy, there was no looking at which side of the family you came from, she had equal love for everyone. She had unconditional love for her children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. She was happiest knowing those around her were happy and content. She was a faithful servant of God and would always remind her family and friends that He was in control, all we had to do was put our trust and faith in Him.
Peggy loved to cook, sew and garden. There was always food to be had when you stopped by for a visit. As a matter of fact, it was expected that you would share a meal with her. She was a very talented seamstress, making many outfits for herself and her children. She was always willing to pass on her talents to those willing to learn. She loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays and Raptors in action. She wasn’t one to watch movies or sitcoms, game shows were her favourite, especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
She was an active member of The Modern High School of Barbados Old Scholars’ Association (Toronto) Inc. She performed significant roles in The Modernite Association (Toronto); such as Treasurer and member of the Membership and Awards Committee.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents Delbert and Sylvia Greenidge (nee Beckles) and her sister Gloria Dottin. She is survived by her sisters Elaine “Patsy” Daniel and Joan Tull, former spouse Norbert Shepherd, daughters Karyn Bridge and Tanya Shepherd, son in law Paul Bridge, grandchildren, Britnee Ramdas, Isaiah Bridge, Tajae and Jelyssa Gustavus, great grandson Caden Reid. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and fond friends.
Although she never revealed what her favourite colour was, she seemed to be drawn to the colours purple and lilac. Please feel free to wear something purple to honour her memory.
Peggy’s homegoing ceremony will be at Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. East, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
Viewing: January 12, 2023, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Service: January 13, 2023, 10:00 a.m., followed by a light brunch.
