Obituary for
Betty Sheptycki
Betty was born in Calgary and raised in Cochrane where her family ran a sawmill and lumber yard. She completed high school in Cochrane and part of that involved her love for basketball.
She met Ken, married, and raised two wonderful children: Melanie and TJ. Through her life they lived in Edmonton, Rawlins Wyoming, on an acreage north of Bruderheim, Fort Saskatchewan, back to Bruderheim, and finally to their dream spot in the hills south of Lamont. The kids were raised in Bruderheim where she was very active with their school and sports. Even though Betty settled a long way from Calgary, she kept in touch with long, long, long distance phone calls with her mum and siblings.
Betty had many passions in life; giving through volunteering was one of them. She was involved with the introduction of ringette to Bruderheim, the expansion of the Bruderheim curling rink, enjoyed working with children and had a selfless commitment to the Lamont Food Bank and Christmas Hamper.
Her working career involved construction of Shell Scotford, banking with ATB, Costco, and seasonal work at Thiel’s Greenhouse in Bruderheim.
You could often find Betty elbows deep in the dirt in her flowerbeds, greenhouse or garden. She used her very creative mind for various arts and crafts in her sewing room or culinary delights in the kitchen. Over the years Betty warmed up to garlic and honed her Ukrainian food cuisine.
Many beautiful summers were spent with friends and family at Beaver Lake. Betty always enjoyed coming across a perch hot spot with a long pole in hand or feeding the fire. She also enjoyed playing cards or whooping it up at a curling bonspiel into the wee hours of the morning.
Her biggest passion was for her family. Two wonderful children and daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren resulted in many happy family gatherings. One major plus was that all lived within a quarter mile of each other which allowed her to be a big part of her grandchildren’s lives. Quite the sight with all three grandkids on the kitchen island figuring out who should sift the flour, crack the eggs, mix whatever was being made, and lick the spoon and bowl. She welcomed any excuse to get the family together. If it involved a fire, hot dog, and a glass of wine; great!
