Obituary
Irene Renneberg (nee Androsoff), age 81, passed away quietly at the Lacombe Continuing Care Centre on November 15, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Arthur Renneberg and her parents, Fred and Anne Androsoff. She is survived by her daughter Wendy (Robert), grandson Eric, and her younger brother Stephen.
Irene was born on her parents farm at Mulhurst, Alberta just as the world was recovering from the Great Depression and World War 2 had begun. She lived with her parents in a converted grain bin as a young child. Prior to reaching school age she moved to a farm in the Shouldice area of southern Alberta and lived near the Anastasia Doukhobor Colony where most of her mother’s relatives resided. Irene only spoke Russian until she started school and was required to learn English. Irene and her parents were actively involved in the Christian Training Center and most of Irene’s youth was spent doing activities there, helping her parents or playing with her cousins. Later on she met Arthur when he came to her parents farm to build grain bins for them. They were married in October of 1958 and originally lived in Shouldice and then Calgary until 1962 when they bought their farm west of Lacombe. By this time their daughter Wendy had been born. Irene and Arthur started mixed farming but eventually specialized in grain farming only. Irene supported her husband’s activities with the Lacombe Flying Club and flew with him regularly in her younger years. Irene was passionate about her grandson, Eric and her cat, Smokey. She was also an avid reader and gardener, producing much of the family’s food supply. During the cold winter months Irene liked to do jigsaw and word search puzzles. This, along with visiting friends, was an activity she continued even when she spent her later winters in Arizona. Health issues caught up with Irene and she became a resident at the Lacombe Continuing Care Centre the last two years of her life but she never stopped wishing she could return to the farm.
Thank you to the staff and volunteers at Lacombe Continuing Care Centre who cared for Mom during her final time on this earth. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.
