Memorial Donation
With great sadness we today announce the passing of Daniel Morrissey, formerly of Brigus.
Dan passed peacefully away on October 15,2022 at the age of 74 at Pleasantview Towers in the presence of his devoted partner and best friend of almost 38 years, Patricia O’Flaherty. Also mourning this immense loss are his sons Chad (Cara) and Danny, as well as a beautiful and talented granddaughter Ceili (all of Calgary), two brothers (and dear friends) Alonzo (Barbara) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Gerard (Darlene) of Coaldale, Alberta.
Predeceased by his parents Edward and Mildred Morrissey of Brigus and his beloved sisters Colleen Quinlan and Bridget Smallwood and brother-in-law Reg Smallwood, as well as his nephews Johnny and Jason Quinlan and Reggie Smallwood.
His great friends Jennie O’Flaherty, Bill Jefferies, Frank and Agnes O’Flaherty, Bernadette and Nick Furey, Jim and Inga Doyle, Jerome and Karen Hurley, Val and Marg Corbett and wonderful Clarkes Beach neighbours, the Snows and the Evelys all supported Dan and Pat throughout his long illness and will miss him dearly. Deepest gratitude is extended to all of them.
Life with Dan was never boring. He was a loving and supportive partner and father. He never shied away from hard work, often working 12 hour days for weeks on end, and often in extremely cold temperatures. He loved it! He has a vast network of friends and co-workers from his 50 years as a well-respected Boilermaker in Newfoundland, Ontario and Alberta.
But on his days off, he loved to shop. There was never a For Sale sign he didn’t like. He loved cars, especially Corvettes. He was also crazy about his pets, his dogs Shasta and Benji and his cat Baby.
He enjoyed his travels, whether for work or pleasure. He was spontaneous and didn’t spend a lot of time analyzing or debating his next adventure.
Dan fought his disease with all his might for more than 8 years. Always aware of his condition he really believed he would be the first person to beat Alzheimer’s. That was not to be but his amazing doctor, Dr. Susan Mercer and the incredible staff of 1SW at Pleasantview Towers did an admirable job of supporting him throughout the many stages of his illness. Many thanks to Brian, Jillian, Lachlan, Emily, Adam, Julie, Nick, Nicole, Halina, Deanne, Sheena and Hazel and especially to Cecilia and Robert and Dr. Patel who were with him at the end and helped him on his final, peaceful journey.
In lieu of flowers and in Dan’s memory, please support the Alzheimer’s Society to aid those patients who are still with us as well as their caregivers and also to ensure those who follow him on this journey may have a fighting chance to become that person who gets to beat this insidious disease.
The SPCA is also a cause that was dear to Dan’s heart and your donations to the Bay Roberts or St. John’s SPCA are welcomed.
Service arrangements are being managed by Broughton’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Broughton’s in Brigus from 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
