Obituary
ATKINSON, Martin Glenwright – 72, Martin was born in Barrington, April 12, 1950. After an 18 month battle with cancer, he succumbed to his disease. During his school years he was an avid sportsman. He did a brief stint in the RCMP which ended due to sports injuries. Back home he was hired in with the lobster and fishing industries. When he married he wanted to be at home more so he decided to go into lobster fishing on his own. He built 3 boats over the years and enjoyed a successful career in the industry. In his retirement years, he enjoyed golfing at River Hills Golf and Country Club, but not so much as volunteering and hunting for golf balls. His mornings were spent at the garage conversing (and arguing) with the men, then off to the golf course, often times not making it onto the golf course at all, finding too many people to talk to – and before he knew it, it was time to go home. He also enjoyed many years of duck hunting in Jones’ Harbour in the fall. His greatest passion was connecting with people. He was all for others and nothing for self. When he married Donna (nee Newell, Ferguson) he became an instant parent to Gary Ferguson (British Columbia) and Mary Linda Clairmont (Barry). When he came to move the three of them over to the new house he had built for them in Newellton, the grandparents started crying and he moved them in too before he even got to move in himself. In 34 of the 43 years of marriage, Martin and Donna never lived alone because Martin’s idea of life was «You’re supposed to look after everyone». He is survived by, Donna, Gary, Mary Linda; grandchildren Emmet, Brianna, Sebastien (Brandon), & Peyton; great grandchildren, Wylie & Floyd. He also leaves behind cousins, aunts, an uncle, along with a host of cherished friends. Martin was predeceased by parents, Charles and Agnes (Blades) Atkinson; grandparents, Leah and Robbie Blades; and a granddaughter, Cameron Clairmont. Thanks to the assistance of the VON, Martin was able to die in his own home surrounded by all those loved him. There will be a visitation at H.M Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel from 7-9 pm on Saturday, September 17, followed by a Memorial Service on Sunday, September 18 at 2pm, with Pastor Jason Parker officiating. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. Memorial donations may be made to charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
