Nancy Visee was born Neeltje Smit in the village of Wierum, Friesland, in The Netherlands.
She was the 3rd daughter, along with sisters Rita and Jane, later followed by Peter and Annette. Their family withstood the hardships of World War II supported by their father’s entrepreneurship and their mother’s hard work, frugality, and common sense. After the war, the family moved to The Hague. Nancy had always dreamt of becoming a nurse but was instead encouraged to take a job with the Royal Dutch Air Force. In 1954, Rita and Nancy immigrated to Canada to be with their sister Jane and husband Gerard. Once settled, Nancy began working as a payroll clerk for the City of Hamilton.
Nancy and Rita soon rekindled relationships with two brothers they had first met back in Holland, and on August 4, 1956, Nancy and William (Bill) Visee, and Rita and Walter Visee, were married in a double wedding ceremony. They settled in Dundas, Ontario. In 1961, daughter Michele was born, followed by son William (Bill Jr.) in 1963. In 1965 Bill and Nancy moved the family to Agincourt, Scarborough, where they spent the next
two decades raising their children and faithfully attending church every Sunday. They spent every holiday and vacation together with their large extended family including Nancy’s mother Maaike Smit-Hiemstra, providing their children with wonderful times surrounded by love, laughs, and great Dutch cooking.
Nancy was very intelligent and nurtured a lifelong passion for education and the written word. When her children went to school she began working as a secretary at Longmans’ Publishing. In 1972, she moved to Gage Educational Publishing as an Editorial and Research Assistant and later as the Copyright Permissions Editor,and was proud to have her name credited in the Gage Canadian Dictionary. She worked at Gage until 1993 when the company was downsized. Never willing to sit still, Nancy then took a course in Medical Administration, following her original passion to help people. However, her plans soon changed with the birth of her first granddaughter.
Daughter Michele married Domenic Melino in 1986 and welcomed their daughters
Abrianna (1993) and Laurenne (1997). Nancy babysat her granddaughter Abrianna full-time, which filled her days with joy. Bill Jr. married Lalaine in 1992 and their sons Ryan (1995) and Cole (1999) soon followed. Nancy and Bill Sr. revelled in having their children and grandchildren around them, and spent vacations and many Sunday dinners together.
Over time Nancy and Bill moved to be closer to their daughter’s family, living in Ajax, Courtice, and finally Durham Christian Homes in Whitby. In 2010, Nancy suffered the loss of Bill Sr., her husband of 53 years. A few years later, Nancy was overjoyed when Abrianna married Colin and gave her two great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Marigold. In late 2019, due to her advancing Alzheimer’s, she moved to White Cliffe Retirement Residence
in Courtice. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff, and especially the PSWs and nurses that provided her with loving care and dignity in her last years.
Nancy was an excellent mother and wife, always putting others’ needs before her own. Nancy was the extrovert of the family and loved the challenge of a great discussion. Her children often marvelled at her ability to talk with anyone she encountered. She had a thirst for knowledge and ensured her children both achieved higher education. She taught them to work hard, help others, be responsible and dependable, and most importantly to love God and follow Jesus. Like her mother before her, Nancy’s strong faith in God sustained her during the darkest of times, including the loss of her dear sisters Jane and Rita, her mother, and her husband. Even as her condition progressed, her faith in God remained steadfast, and her loving heart continued to shine through. Throughout her life and to her last days, Nancy expressed her fierce love of family through both words and actions. The family thanks God for her life and her positive influence. She will be missed immensely.
Visitation Details: Family and friends may gather at the Accettone Funeral Home, 384 Finley Avenue, Ajax on
Sunday, September 11, 2022 from 1:00 pm til 2:00 pm. We will then process to Forestbrook Community Church 60 Kearney Dr, Ajax for a Service at 2:30 pm.
