Obituary for
Evelyn Mae VanBuskirk (Densmore)
VanBuskirk, Evelyn “Evie” Mae (Densmore) – Age 96, Bible Hill. We are saddened to announce passing of our much-loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on August 24, 2022, surrounded by her family.
Mom was born in East Noel on January 2, 1926. She spent her early years on the Point Road, East Noel, going to work at the tender age of fourteen in Forest Glen, which at that time would have been a very long way from home. She married her husband of 58 years, Roderick VanBuskirk, in 1946. They lived in Hilden for a couple of years, then moved to Hillcrest Avenue in Bible Hill. Mom worked for many years cleaning houses, then at Stanfield’s and later with Quality & Thrift in Truro. She was such a hard worker.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Arnold) Hamilton, Onslow; son, Ross VanBuskirk, Hilden; daughter, Maria (Phil) Forman, Debert; grandchildren, Troy Hamilton, Tracey Hamilton (Darren Works), Sara (Cory) Alexander, Caitlyn (Will) Johnstone; great grandchildren, Breanna Barter and Danielle Johnstone; brother, Glendon (Sandra) Densmore, Ottawa; sisters, Muriel Turner, New Ross, Effie Hilchie, Noel Shore, Sylvia Shea, New Minas, Marilyn (Bruce White) McLellan, Walton, Linda (Oege) Vanderkooi, Shubenacadie; sister-in-law, Sipkje Densmore, New Glasgow, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Rossie Densmore; husband, Rod; son, Wayne; brothers, Raymond (Elaine), Lloyd, and Elroy Densmore; brothers-in-law, Philson Turner, Harvey Shea and Roland Hilchie.
Mom was the last member of the Hillcrest ladies’ group – Marg Patriquin, Chrissa Richard, Mary Moore, Polly Richards and Madalene Richard. These ladies were quite the team, always looking out for each other, and us children. Mom loved them all dearly. A sincere thank you to former Hillcrest kids, Monica Bennicke, Heather Robichaud and Dave Moore for your love and support over these past few days. Our Hillcrest Avenue family is amazing.
In her “retirement” years, mom loved to quilt, and attended weekly quilt sessions with the Hannah Group at St David’s United Church. She also loved old time music and made many great friends at the Y Seniors Dances in Truro.
Mom was still sharp as a tack, sassy and often outspoken. She sure kept us on our toes. We are grateful that this was not a lengthy illness for her. She refused to even consider a nursing home – she won that battle. Many thanks to Colchester East Hants Health Authority for their quick and compassionate treatment of our mother in her last days. The care they provided to her, and us, was exemplary.
Thank you to Dr Stephen Ellis for your many years of caring for our mother, she was a bit of a challenge we know, but you handled her well.
We are very grateful for the family cottage that Mom and Dad built in Upper Economy, right on the Bay. We will spend many days appreciating all their hard work to provide this beautiful place for our family to continue to gather for many years to come.
Donations may be made to St David’s United Church or charity of choice.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, August 28th at 12pm until time of Funeral service at 1pm, with Eileen Corah presiding, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Burial to follow in Crossroads Cemetery, Valley. Webcasting will begin at 12:58pm (AST) and is available along with online condolences by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
