Gregory “Greg” Dale Smerchynski was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. He left this world on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at the age of 61. Recently, he battled serious medical issues with optimism and courage and remained strong until the end.
He was predeceased by his son Taylor, his mother Eleanor and his father-in-law Steve Antal. Greg is survived by his wife Kim (nee Antal); daughter Tahnee (Jory); father Gerry; brother Troy (Teresa); mother-in-law Vivian Antal as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Greg met his wife Kim when they were teenagers and they adored their time together over the years. Greg was married to the love of his life for over 34 years and they spent most of their time in Regina raising their family. Raising their family was Greg’s proudest and most rewarding time of his life. Greg and Kim enjoyed cooking meals together and spending time with their children; they were his pride and joy. He retired early at the age of 55 after 35 years as a Train Conductor with CN rail. Greg and Kim’s retirement was spent travelling. You could find them at their happy places; Costa Rica in the winter and Tobin Lake in the summer. He and Kim had plans of travelling across Canada in a travel van to explore the eastern side of the country. Greg dreamt about watching a live NASA launch, a NASCAR race and travelling on the Chunnel from England to France.
He loved spending time watching sports and cheering on his favourite teams like the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Oilers. There wasn’t a sport that Greg didn’t enjoy following and chatting about. He and his brother Troy would spend hours talking about upcoming games and making Sport Select bets.
Greg’s love of classic rock, comedy specials and athletics were adopted over the years by his daughter. Always a Daddy’s Girl, there were few interests they didn’t have in common. Greg’s son left this earth too early but together they enjoyed fishing at the cottage and could be found laughing no matter what the situation.
Greg will be remembered for his positive spirit, light-hearted attitude and his ability to find the funny side to any scenario. He loved unconditionally and was a proud husband and father.
A private service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at the Pasqua Hospital ICU and the General Hospital MICU and the General Hospital Internal Medicine unit for the compassionate care they provided to Greg.
