Obituary
Roy Abel Nystrom long time resident of Grimshaw, Alberta passed away on April 21, 2022, at Stonebrook at the age of 91 years.
Roy was born July 17, 1930, in Sylvan Lake. His parents Emanual Nystrom and Sadie Nystrom nee: Soderberg moved up to the Deerhill area where Roy initially grew up. Roy went to school in Bluesky, Berwyn and Grimshaw.
Roy led a remarkable life. As a businessman/entrepreneur, he was a big advocate for the north and his community. Roy was involved with the Elks, the Legion, Rotary, Town Council, Eastern Star, the Square Dance Club, Mackenzie Regional Radio Club as well as a volunteer for the CNIB offering supports to those dealing with sight impairments.
Roy managed his blindness disability with resilience and grace. With tools from the CNIB, Roy was extremely well read, taught himself to type, became very computer literate and read brail.
Travel was a passion, even if he was seeing the world through Esme’s eyes. They enjoyed making many memories together.
Roy was predeceased by his brother, Ed Reid. Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Esme; daughter, Veronica (Don) Bliska and grandchildren, Joseph and Lauren; daughter, Shirley (Henry); Karseboom grandchildren, Nicolas and Emily and brother, Bill Reid. His joyful presence will be missed.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Chapel of Memories. A Celebration of Life will be held June 27, 2022, at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in Grimshaw, Alberta at 11:00 a.m.
