Dad lived a full life, there is no doubt about that. He started work as a teenager and spent his career as Stationary Engineer at CIP Containers, where he met and maintained lifelong friendships. Through those years, along with playing the role of husband and father, he developed a love for fishing, hunting, spending time at his cabin and developing and perfecting his musical skills. He has also held a love – hate relationship with the Toronto Maple Leafs for decades, but ultimately remained a fan to the very end. Upon retirement, he became more involved in music, and made his pilgrimage, as any good country music fan would, to the epi-centre of country music, Nashville Tennessee. He treasured that trip for the rest of his life. He became a member of the Retired Citizens Association and met many musical friends. Together they spent many Tuesday and Thursday afternoons jamming at the association and on occasion, he performed at Open Mic nights where he would perform one of his favorite songs, “Today I Started Loving You Again” by Merle Haggard. He will be forever remembered by his signature Black leather Stetson and Vest.
Dad established many loyal friendships, which include his nephew and friend Jackie Carew, his buddy and partner in crime, Bren Walsh and his group of special friends at the Retired Citizens Association where they will miss his weekly presence on stage and beyond.
The family would like to thank the support he has been given by his neighbours in the Goulds and many family members and friends. Special thanks to HSC 4 South B Nurses and Stroke team, especially Dr. Fernandez and Dr. Magnusson for all their care and dedication in dad’s time of need.
Funeral service to be held from Barrett’s Memorial Chapel on Saturday, December 18th at 2pm. As per government of NL regulation, proof of vaccination is required to attend. Interment to follow at St. Kevin’s Cemetery, Goulds.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Billy’s memory may be made to MusicNL.
From “Sing me Back Home” by Merle Haggard
“Make my old memories come alive
Take me away and turn back the years
Sing me back home before I die”
Dad, may you finally rest in peace…until we meet again and as you always said, “if it ain’t country, it ain’t music!”
