Obituary of Wijntje Van Baalen
Van Baalen, Wijntje
Peacefully passed away on March 26, 2021 at Linhaven, in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Pieter (2013). Loving mother of William (Michelle), Bert (Christina), Gerald (Shirley), Peter (Sherry) and Maaike. She will be sadly missed by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dear sister of Rien Roos (Phia) of the Netherlands. Predeceased by her daughter Wilma (2019) and siblings Jani, Herman, Elisabeth, Maus, Willemijntje, Gerritje and Gijsbert. Wijntje was born and raised in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with her husband Pieter, as a newlywed, on April 1, 1953. They settled in Wainfleet and together started a greenhouse operation which they ran for over 35 years. She worked in the greenhouse and worked hard to raise her family. She was a faithful member of Maranatha Reformed Church where she had many friends and enjoyed being part of the choir. Wijntje was an incredibly accomplished seamstress, sewing and knitting everything from wedding dresses to stuffed animals, and was a talented artist carefully crafting paper tole pictures, tole painting and many more treasures. She was an avid gardener and a great cook and baker. Everyone loved her boxes of homemade Dutch goodies at Christmas, homemade bread and speculaas. She enjoyed serving her community, most frequently shown through her work with the church. Because of her strong faith we know she is home with her Father in Heaven, and after a long fight with dementia, is now at peace. The family is very grateful for the care and support she received by the incredible team at Linhaven in St. Catharines over the last several years. Arrangements are entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. Due to COVID – 19 pandemic, there will be a private family Funeral Service at Maranatha Reformed Church and interment will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Maranatha Reformed Church. Online memories, photos, condolences and donations may be shared at www.armstrongfuneralhome.ca
