Obituary
With heavy hearts, the family of Walter Smith announces his passing, which occurred at Bobby’s Hospice on June 22, 2021. Walter was born in Saint John on March 12, 1951; a son of the late Gordon and Edna Smith, and the loving husband of Valerie (Mannett) Smith. During his working years, Walter was employed as a Welder with Saint John Shipbuilding, and afterwards worked for School District 8 as a Custodian. He was a dedicated member of the St. Martins District Lions Club, loved darts, curling, hunting with his brothers, country music (especially Elvis and Garth Brooks) but above all else, he loved spending time with his family. Walter was also a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Along with his wife Valerie, he is survived by his sons Shane (Sherrie) and Trevor (Cheryl) both of St. Martins, daughters Shelly King (Stephen) of Edmonton and Tracie Dyker (Peter) of Saint John, brothers Dave Smith (Carol) and Raymond Smith (Hilda) both of Saint John, and one sister, Carol (Orvele) of Ontario. Along with his parents, Walter was pre-deceased by brothers Leonard, Danny, Donnie, Gordie, and Jimmy, as well as sisters Phyllis Jacquard, Betty Driscoll, Emma, and Doris McGaghee.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Father Ken Weir, as well as the staff of both Extra Mural and Bobby’s Hospice for their outstanding care.
In keeping with Walter’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service, and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances to Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated.
