W Harold Hampel Friday March 12th 2021

W. Harold (Hal) Hampel
June 27th, 1929 – March 12th, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Harold, at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Mar 12th, 2021 in his 92nd year. Dear husband of Mary Hampel (Blimkie) for 65 years. Cherished father of Jennifer (Michael Beaudette), and Randy. Dear brother of Jean Latham, Barrie. He will also be missed by sisters/brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. Predeceased by parents William H. Hampel and Jessie Wolf (nee Witt). Harold worked for many years at the Federal employment agency in Pembroke (then known as Manpower), until his retirement in 1985. Prior to this he worked at the Petawawa Forest Experiment Station at Chalk River, and as a carpenter at CFB Petawawa. Dad was an honourable and religious man who was intelligent, extremely hard-working, had an eye for detail, and always appreciated a good joke. He was a master craftsman, turning out many fine pieces of furniture throughout the years. He loved animals (especially dogs – he had many neighbourhood canine friends over the years, as well as beloved family dogs that he enjoyed so many happy times with and loved so much). He was a skilled handyman who could fix pretty well anything, and he was always willing to lend a hand to help others. Dad was an avid gardener, and planted flower and vegetable gardens, both at home and at the cottage. For many years he started plants in a small greenhouse he constructed himself in the back yard. He loved Lancaster bombers, steam trains, Studebakers, Ford Mustangs and F-150 trucks, but most of all he loved his family and spending time at the cottage at Lake Clear. This was Dad’s favourite place to be. He built the cottage himself, starting with the boathouse in 1952 when he was only 22 years old. He and Mom spent almost 70 years cottaging there – all of the weekends of every summer, summer holidays (always taken the first three weeks of July), and for many weeks of the summer during his retirement years. His account of his time at Lake Clear is documented in the book “Lake Clear Treasured Memories”, published in 2011. Dad’s loss is so keenly felt. We are heartbroken. At his 90th birthday celebration he said that he wished he had another 50 years. How we wish that could have been possible. He will live on in our cherished memories and most importantly, in our hearts. This is not goodbye, Dad, but just so long for now. The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at the Pembroke Regional Hospital, who looked after Dad in his final days. A special thank you to Dr. Ratnayake, Dr. Rowan, and Rev. Garry Engler for their care and compassion. The family will receive relatives and friends at the
