It is with deep sadness that Lynne and Dianne announce the passing of their mother, Viola Elizabeth Rossos, on November 27, 2021.
Born June 28, 1925 at the family homestead in Big Intervale, Northeast Margaree, Vi was the daughter of the late Hugh and Maggie (Ross) MacKinnon and a sister to Ross (Martha MacDonald), Mary (Clifford Ross), Frank (Jenny Sommers) and Catherine, all of whom predeceased her.
Vi was a devout member of Westmount United Church for over 60 years and was a current member of United Heritage Church, Sydney. She was also a life member of the United Church Women.
Vi “immigrated” to Sydney in her late teens to work at the Isle Royale Hotel, then to Fred’s Creamery and finally to Maritime Tel and Tel as an Operator. It was at MT&T that she met and married her handsome Greek, John Rossos. Together they built a home in Westmount where they raised their two daughters.
Vi was renowned for her hospitality, and her homes in Westmount and Sydney were fondly referred to as the Do Drop Inn. She took great pleasure in overnight guests, cooking and baking for friends and church and gathering at the table with family for Sunday suppers and special occasions. Over the years, Vi made many lasting friends over a game of Bridge, Tarbish or Auction. She loved to travel, particularly by car, and could be ready at the drop of a hat for a weekend in Margaree or a trip across Canada.
Left to celebrate her memory are Vi’s daughters, Lynne (Ron Reid) and Dianne (David Rutherford), her beloved grandchildren, Shelly and Jonathan Reid and Kristopher (Tracey) Rutherford and her great-granddaughters, Breina and Kelsey Rutherford. She is also survived by sister-in-law and best friend, Margaret Harrington, and a number of nieces and nephews with whom she was very close.
Vi was predeceased by her husband, John in 1999.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. The notification of a memorial service will be published at a later date. Burial to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Those wishing to remember Vi are invited to make a memorial donation to Operation Eyesight Universal, 4 Parkdale Cres. NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 9Z9 or to the CB Regional Hospital Cancer Centre. Mom would be most pleased if family and friends would just pass on an act of kindness.
Through the midst of our sadness, the light of love beholds a rainbow, the rainbow of her virtues – the red of her courage, the orange of her loyalty, the yellow of her vision, the green of her fellowship, the blue of her humility and the orchid of her service.
