TONY GLENA
On August 15, 2021, Tony Glena, age 83, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully with his family by his side at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with cancer and heart disease. Tony was born in Rorketon, Manitoba and raised in Dauphin, Manitoba. At 20 years old, Tony moved to Fort William to be with his brothers and got a job with Doran’s Beverages (Kakabeka Brewery) delivering soft drinks. In 1970, Tony joined Carling O’Keefe as a Sales Representative. When Carling O’Keefe merged with Molson Canada, Tony continued working for Molson until his retirement. For summer fun after retirement, he worked several years as a Golf Ranger with the City of Thunder Bay. In his spare time, Tony enjoyed fastball, bocce, golfing, curling, hunting, and fishing. He was also a dedicated member of St. George’s Society of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross.
Shortly after moving to Thunder Bay, Tony met the love of his life, Lucy Cunyk and her children Doreen and Johnnie. A few years later they welcomed their son Jim. During their 60 years together, Tony and Lucy enjoyed spending their summers at Whitefish Lake and after retirement, winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Tony is predeceased by his parents Peter and Nellie Glena, his siblings Mary, Alec, Mike, Eva, and John, and his son Johnnie. He is survived by his loving wife Lucy, brother Billy, daughter Doreen (Rick White), son Jim (Trish), grandchildren Janelle (Deen Khurshed & Alinah), Brett (Erin Hansen), Tori, John Jr., and Shea-Leigh, as well as his fur grandchildren Ginger, Tiki, Charlie, and Tango. Tony is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family would like to extend many thanks to the wonderful and caring doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department, Oncology Ward, and Cancer Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. A special thank you to Nurses Dina, Jorie, Elaina, Ally, Erin, and Kayla from 1A who took such great care of Tony during his final days.
A celebration of life will take place at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 12pm, officiated by Father Stepan Didur. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a limited number of people will be able to attend in person and they will receive invitations. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign or the Thunder Bay Regional Northern Cancer Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
