Tom Mather, of Hanover, formerly of Priceville, passed away at Hospice of Waterloo Region on Thursday, August 26, 2021. He was 98.
Born in Glenelg Township on May 10, 1923 to the late William and Rebecca (nee Park) Mather. Tom took over the family farm and farmed in Priceville until his retirement. He then moved to Hanover, becoming a “jack-of-all” trades. Many memories were made as caretaker of the McNeil Cemetery as he was knowledgeable and known as the area historian. He had a wonderful witty way about him and enjoyed many friendships over the years. He married the love of his life Lavina (nee Stevens) and had even celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary before her passing. He enjoyed living at Sprucewood Court where he could always find an adventure to get involved with. He had a knack for everything he did and was quite handy. He impressively grew and maintained his tomatoes year round in his window.
Survived by sons Jim (Dianne) Mather of Elmwood, Bob (Bonnie) Mather of Chatham, daughters Lois Culliton (Harold Burnett) of Barrie and Lynn (Ed) Weimer of Waterloo. Loved grandfather of 4 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by his beloved wife Lavina (nee Stevens) and sisters Eleanor Eckhardt, Mary Odell, Isabel Baujard and Jean McIntyre.
A public visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Monday, August 30, 2021 from 10:30 – 11:30 am. A Private Family Funeral Service will follow. There will be a short time of committal at McNeil Cemetery in Priceville on Monday, August 30, 2021 at 12:45 pm. All are welcome to attend the cemetery services. Rita O’Neill officiating.
As per Tom’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Hospice of Waterloo Region or to the Hanover & District Hospital Foundation are appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.mightonfuneralhome.ca
