Sydney
It is with broken hearts that we, the family of John ‘Jackie’ Thomson announce his passing on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long battle with cancer.
Born on July 26, 1954 in Glace Bay, Jackie was the son of the late Charles and Rebecca (Grant) Thomson.
Jackie was predeceased by his loving wife, Veronica, whom he cared for through her battle with cancer until she passed in 2019.
Jackie is survived by his two children, Susan (Scott) Everill and Jonathon (Miranda) Thomson; three grandchildren, Jesse, Jenna, and Jace; siblings, Marie (Russel), Marilyn (Joe), Joe (Linda, deceased), Jerry (Linda), Patsy (Rick, deceased), Sharon (Tom), Billy (Rose), Les, Heather (Dave), Joss (Darlene), Vera (Raymond), Pam, Paul (Kathleen) and sister-in-law, Margie (Chummy, deceased); as well as several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and spouse, Jackie was predeceased by his brother, Chummy.
Jackie grew up in a large family and had lots of stories to tell about his childhood. He worked as a coal miner for Devco for many years and also ran a family garbage business, JVS Trucking, now known as S&J Disposal. He was always busy and up until just recently, would be found driving a garbage truck with his best buddy, Myra beside him. Jackie loved to spend time in the garage, chatting with the guys after they finished their shift and getting ready for the next workday. He enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays and summers on the Mira. In his off time, he loved to go for a ride on his Harley with Jonathon or working on their next project, and going on an evening drive with Veronica, or calling his “Babe” Susan to talk about her day. Jackie loved his family, he loved to have his children and grandchildren around and would cook a family meal so they could get together every week. He loved his Sunday drives and going for breakfast and talking on the phone with his good buddies. Jackie had a giant heart, and always helped anyone who needed it.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, The Cape Breton Cancer Center, Dr Saliba, and many doctors and nurses who have helped Dad through his journey.
Memorials in memory of Jackie, may be made to An Cala Palliative Care Unit or the Cancer Care Fund (CBRH).
