Tom spent his younger years working with his father in the NF fishery but shortly after graduating from St Bon’s High School in St. John’s,he applied for a position as a field mechanic at the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labrador City, Labrador in 1959. It was there he met Cynthia and they started a life together raising a family and enjoying many outdoor activities such as skiing, skidooing, camping and fishing. He left his position at IOC in 1985after accepting an offer with Exxon and moved the family to Barranquilla, Colombia. Tom could fix anything and his work took him all over the world including Guyana, Uruguay, Venezuela, Nova Scotia, India, and The North West Territories to name a few. He loved meeting people and experiencing new cultures but was always very clear whenever he was asked if he was born in Canada, his answer was always – “No, I was born in Newfoundland”.
Twenty years ago Tom was very fortunate to have been given a second chance at life following successful, quadruple bypass heart surgery. He was grateful for every minute and lived his life to the fullest.
His last evening was spent with his loving wife, children, and all his grandchildren on the shores of the Ottawa River, near the water, staying up to midnight to watch his Montreal Canadians win in overtime.
We are forever grateful we could all be together one last time.
