It is with great sadness that we announce that Terry Halleran, another Nelson eccentric, has died. He may have tuned your piano, you may know him from the Hall Street mural, or you may have seen him vacuuming up dandelion seeds in his yard rather than using pesticides. Any way you knew him, he was not forgettable. His involvement in the music of Nelson spans 50 years. In the ’70’s he was involved in musicals like Oliver Twist, and in the ’80’s was a fixture at DTUC’s student pub listening to music (and drinking beer), organizing the Royal Conservatory of Music exams, running the Nelson Music Festival, participated in the Nelson Overture Society and attending numerous events at the Capitol Theatre. He played the trombone, guitar, piano and loved singing and dancing. One of his proudest musical accomplishment was performing in the Nelson opera, Khaos.
He had many hobbies including woodworking, old trucks, travel and motorcycles, and enjoyed collecting every item he would need to complete any project. Some may call this hoarding but we prefer to think of it as leaving behind a yard full of imaginative and varied but ultimately unfinished dreams. His sense of humour was often off-colour and we think he knew every word that Basil Faulty ever spoke. He has left behind his loving wife and co-adventurer of 54 years, Chris Halleran, as well as his daughters Sarah Halleran (husband, Niels, and kids Elliot and Emily) and Katie Sullivan (husband, Brett, kids Duncan and Heath), and numerous nieces and nephews. As well he leaves behind the many friends he would sing, dance, and joke around with (“dancing girls” and “coffee boys”). Terry left this life as he lived his life- on his own terms, surrounded by family with a joke on his lips. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
Due to COVID we will delay a celebration of life until a gathering can be planned. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your favorite arts related activity – buy a ticket, support an artist, attend a show in Terrys memory.
