Obituary
Saunders, Stuart Milton
October 28, 1933 – September 30, 2021
Born to Reverend Charles and Helena Saunders in Langton, ON. Predeceased by his wife Betty (nee Sparrow) and brothers Keith and Donald. Survived by his daughter Lynn, with her daughter Markita, by his daughter Kathryn, and by his son Bob, with his daughters Kayla and Chelsey. Stuart will also be missed by two loving sisters, Marie Watson and Sheila Arthur (Phil), and by many dear siblings-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
A man of modesty and humility, his calm and private nature belied the intelligent and compassionate father that we so deeply loved. Graduating from the Ontario Agriculture College (now Guelph University) in 1956, he moved to Saskatchewan that same year to start his career with the Federal Department of Agriculture. He met his soon-to-be wife, Betty, at the First Baptist Church. They married in 1958 and lived in Prince Albert, where their three children were born before Stuart transferred back to Saskatoon in 1967. Working his way up from crop inspector to working in the Agriculture Canada testing labs, Stuart ended his exemplary 36-year career as Head of the Western Canada Seed Lab. He was honoured with the first Award of Excellence given by the Mid-West Region.
Stuart had an amazing, albeit dry, sense of humour and his quietly-selfless generosity will always be remembered by family members and neighbours. Dad was a jack-of-all-trades, doing much of the carpentry and construction at our house, building rowboats for the Baptist bible camp at Christopher Lake, working on vehicles, and creating his enviable backyard and garden spaces.
Until the very end, Dad was a deeply spiritual man. His love for God showed, daily. His faith and belief in Jesus’ love was reflected in his every action and word. Never was there a doubt that he loved his children. His dedication and devotion to his wife, Betty, was undeniable. As Mom’s health deteriorated, Dad took on the role of caregiver. There was not a single day that Dad did not tell Mom how much he loved her. After her passing, there was not a single day that he did not miss her deeply and dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2021 at Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Dr.) in Saskatoon.
