Stephen William James Clement
Peacefully at the PCH, Summerside, on Tuesday, June 22nd,
2021, of Stephen (Steve) William James Clement of Tryon, age 79 years.
Loving husband of Barbara ( nee Smith) Clement. Loving father of Nancy
(Graeme Hunter) Clement and James (Michelle Prouse) Clement and loving
grandfather of Rosa-Prouse Clement and Vera-Prouse Clement.
Lovingly remembered by his sister Marcia Clement, Ottawa;
sister-in-law Elaine Smith, BC and nine nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his sister Susan Flemming. As well as being a devoted
husband, father, and grandfather, Steve was a scientist, an artist,
and a strong supporter of the PEI Arts community. He designed the
SHRIMP (Sensitive High Resolution Ion Micro Probe), a scientific
instrument used to date some of the world’s oldest rocks. This work
brought Steve and his family to live in Australia, Denmark, and back
to Canada. It allowed Steve, and often Barb to travel to SHRIMP
conferences in many other countries, including China, South Korea,
Russia, USA, and New Zealand. At 79, he was still consulting for the
university of Beijing on design modifications to this and other
scientific equipment, and has close friends and colleagues in both
Australia and China. As an artist, Steve’s passion for all things
nautical shone through. His primary subjects were PEI seascapes,
fishing ports, and coastal areas, as well as historical
representations of ships built on PEI. His preferred medium for many
years was etching, to which he could apply both the precision of his
drafting skills and his artistic eye for beauty and flow. His art was
shown in galleries across the Island, including the Confederation
Centre of the Arts and the Eptek Centre, and his works were featured
in an acticle on the Yankee Gale. Steve has also given illustrated
lectures on the history of ship-building on PEI, and was working on
additional illustrations and information on ships built in the
Tryon-Victoria-Crapaud area. Steve contributed much to his community,
mainly through support of the arts—theatre, music, and visual arts.
As well as being one of the founders of the Strathgartney Chamber
Orchestra, he served many years on the Boards of the Victoria
Playhouse, Great George Street Gallery, and South Shore Arts Council.
Steve also put many hours into chairing and supporting the PEI chapter
of the Huntington’s Society. Steve loved music and regularly attended
the PEI Symphony, Atlantic String Machine, Blues Jams at the Haviland
and concerts at Indian River. He found Celtic music particularly
uplifting and rarely missed a Sunday Session at the Old Triangle,
where he formed strong friendships with the musicians and dancers, and
where he invariable struck up a conversation with strangers and
invited them to sit with Barb and him. Steve also greatly enjoyed
intercultural events, where his sociability and genuine inerest in
people led him into long conversations – and often long friendships –
with new Islanders from many cultures. Steve’s kindness intelligence,
and conversations will be deeply missed by his family and friends,
here and abroad. Funeral arrangements to be announced at a
later date. In lieu of flowers donations to South Shore United Church
or Huntington Society of Canada
