Shirley Elizabeth Powers Hamilton Sunday November 15th 2020

Shirley Elizabeth Powers, August 18, 1925 – November 15, 2020
A wonderful life has come to a peaceful end.
Born in Cowansville, QC, to Margaret and Clarence Hamilton, Mom attended Montreal General Hospital, where she became an RN. She nursed in Grand-Mere, QC, where she met and married the love of her life, John Powers. Everyone but Mom called him Jack, but he was always “John” to her.
Mom and Dad started their family in Quebec, and then moved to and settled in Lunenburg, where Mom was very active within her family and the community. She volunteered with many boards and organizations including the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Harbourview Haven, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital board, the Margaret R. Unit at Central United Church, and Girl Guides of Canada. Mom loved her garden and took great pride in her roses, in particular. She also enjoyed golfing, curling, skating, swimming and bridge.
She was a great cook and the house always smelled so good! Best known as the mom who put money in birthday cakes, but not before boiling and wrapping the coins first! She was also an excellent seamstress and made many of her own clothes, as well as ours – Christmas outfits, anyone?
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her two brothers, Kenneth and Douglas, and her husband John.
Mom is survived and greatly missed by her brother, William (Ontario) and her four children- John, Lunenburg, Nancy (Roy Harrington), Victoria, BC, Kathy (Meredith Shaw), Hammonds Plains and Joan (Don Carey) Head of St. Margaret’s Bay. Mom is also survived by nine grandchildren- Joshua, Emily, Julia and Sarah Powers, Matthew Lewis, David Harrington, Graham, Alexander and Lorelei Carey, 3 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Lynn Key and her fabulous, caring staff at Heart to Heart in Marriott’s Cove, for their compassionate care of Mom. You were there when we needed you and went over and above for us.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lunenburg on Saturday, November 21 at 1 pm, led by Rev. Don MacPherson. Social distancing and COVID-19 rules will be in effect.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice thru the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home.
Mom was very fond of telling us, when any of us were driving anywhere- drive carefully. Now it is our turn…. Drive carefully, Mom, we’ll see you on the other side.
